Suleiman Reiterates Army's Role in Preventing Flow of Arms into Lebanon

President Michel Suleiman reiterated on Monday the significant role of the army and security agencies in preventing arms smuggling in Lebanon, the state-run National News Agency reported.

“The army and security apparatus play an important role in preventing the flow of weapons and armed groups,” said Suleiman.

Moreover, the president urged political powers in Lebanon to commit to the policy adopted by the government and the national dialogue of dissociating the country from regional conflicts as stipulated in the Baabda Declaration.

“Everyone in Lebanon should abide by the policy that calls for dissociating Lebanon from external conflicts,” he added.

Suleiman's comments came on the backdrop of an incident on Friday when a group of 21 Lebanese Islamists from Tripoli were killed in an ambush in the Syrian border town of Tall Kalakh.

Media reports said that the victims were fighting alongside the Syrian opposition.

Heavy gunfire was heard in Tripoli on Friday night between the mainly Sunni Bab al-Tabbaneh district and the neighboring Shiite district of Jabal Mohsen in light of the incident.

Bab al-Tabbaneh has been the scene of deadly clashes with Jabal Mohsen, which supports Syrian President Bashar Assad's regime.

You should learn a little about geopolitics and history would also help...especially that of the US in Lebanon and the Middle East and the way it has "protected" the Christians of the area. ehhh tfeeee.

@The1phoenix,
the president should works more on HA's incorporation to the Lebanese State, thus the sunni extremism will shrink. we need more than ever the presence of the state and President Suleiman can and should play a big role to reassure the Lebanese.

could not agree more.
sunnis in Lebanon have never been extremists, and now they are being pushed towards extremism.
but then again, like the Israelis who feel threatened by any state like Lebanon where there is coexistence, hizbushaitan too needs extremism to justify their existence.
in other words, whether Israel or hizbushaitan, both are using the same tactics by pushing others towards extremism, so they can justify their heavily armed presence and actions.

@ Geha
Please don't say "Hizbushaitan". be respectuful. They are Lebanese and we need them as much as they need us.
Khlessna ba2a tafri2a, you can be against their policy but you have to respect them.

sorry I cannot comply to your request Vaclav for the following reasons:
- you cannot be against GOD, but you can be against satan. thus the naming convention.
- having an Iranian agenda, I cannot consider them as Lebanese.
so regretfully I cannot agree with your cmment

@geha

Why the hell do you insult him ? Anytime someone tries to task the matter of Hezbollah's arsenal they resort to insults. Instead try to propose how we could end this crisis.
