Progressive Socialist Party leader MP Walid Jumblat has suggested that there is a link between a blast that went off Sunday evening outside a major bank in Beirut and a growing row between Hizbullah and the central bank governor over the implementation of U.S. financial sanctions against the party.

“The objective of the bombing in Beirut is to deal a blow to the economy and the banking system and I had called for a calm dialogue about the U.S. sanctions,” Jumblat told An Nahar newspaper shortly after the explosion outside the Verdun headquarters of BLOM Bank.

A bomb went off Sunday evening outside a branch of the BLOM Bank in Beirut's Verdun area, injuring two people.

The powerful explosion was heard across the western part of the capital.

Nine members of the same family have been food poisoned and transferred to the state-run Rafik Hariri University Hospital in Beirut, the Health Ministry announced on Sunday.

Resigned Justice Minister Ashraf Rifi said on Saturday that the outcome of the municipal elections in Tripoli carry a political message, and assured that there are good-will mediators trying to maintain contact between al-Mustaqbal Movement chief Saad Hariri and himself.

“The political message derived from the results of the municipal elections in Tripoli cannot be overlooked,” Rifi told Voice of Lebanon Radio (100.5) in a telephone call.

Unknown assailants shot firearms on Saturday on the house of the former municipal chief of the town of Bazzal in the northern region of Akkar, the state-run National News Agency reported.

“The assailants opened fire on the house of Sheikh Hatem Othman inflicting material damages on the house but no casualties were reported,” said NNA.

Lebanese banks are set to close the accounts of Hizbullah lawmakers, ministers, spouses and children that are deposited in the U.S. dollar, but will keep untouched those deposited in the Lebanese Lira, well-informed sources told Ashraq al-Awsat daily on Saturday.

The move comes after a reputable bank in Lebanon closed the bank accounts of Hizbullah officials and all individuals having links to the party, a Hizbullah MP told the daily on condition of anonymity.
