Niger Won't Extradite Gadhafi Son Despite 'Subversive' Talk

Niger will not extradite Saadi Gadhafi even though the son of the slain Libyan leader violated his asylum conditions with "subversive" comments in a television interview, officials said Saturday.

"Our position remains the same -- we will hand Saadi Gadhafi to a government that has an independent and impartial justice system," government spokesman Marou Amadou told reporters in Niamey.

Gadhafi Son Says Rebellion Brewing in New Libya

Saadi Gadhafi, one of the sons of Libya's slain dictator Moammar Gadhafi, has said a nationwide rebellion is brewing against the country's new rulers as he vowed to return to his homeland.

"I will return to Libya at any time," Saadi Kadhafi told al-Arabiya television by telephone from neighboring Niger, where he took refuge after the fall of Tripoli which ended his father's 42-year iron-fisted rule of Libya.

Canadian Firm Drops 2 Execs with Saadi Gadhafi Ties

Canadian engineering firm SNC-Lavalin said late Thursday it has sacked two executives loosely linked to a failed plot to smuggle a son of ex-Libyan dictator Moammar Gadhafi into Mexico.

The pair became the focus of reports after Mexican officials announced charges in an elaborate plan to bring 38-year-old Saadi Gadhafi and other relatives into Mexico on false papers last year at the height of pro-democracy protests in Libya.

Army Chief Says Gadhafi Diehards Might Attack on Revolution Day

Diehard supporters of slain Moammar Gadhafi might carry out attacks on February 17, the anniversary of the uprising against the former Libyan strongman, Libya's army chief said on Wednesday.

Syrians Hoist 'New Flag' on Russia's Libya Embassy

Crowds of Syrians chanting anti-Russian slogans entered Moscow's embassy in Tripoli on Sunday and hoisted the new Syrian flag on the building, an Agence France Presse journalist and a Syrian activist said.

The journalist said about 200 Syrians entered the embassy and first removed the Russian flag.

41 in Court at First Libya Trial of Gadhafi Loyalists

Libya put 41 loyalists of dead dictator Moammar Gadhafi on trial on Sunday, in the first legal proceedings launched against members of the former regime which was ousted after a bloody conflict.

The accused, mostly civilians, appeared in a military court in the eastern city of Benghazi, the birthplace of the uprising against Gadhafi which ended on October 20 with his killing in his home town of Sirte.

Libya's ex-Envoy to France Dies in Custody

Libya's ex-ambassador to France, Omar Brebesh, has died in the custody of a militia from possible torture, less than 24 hours after he was detained by the armed group, Human Rights Watch said on Friday.

HRW said a Tripoli-based militia from the town of Zintan detained Brebesh on January 19 and that a preliminary autopsy found the cause of death included "multiple bodily injuries and fractured ribs."

ICC Rejects Gadhafi Daughter's Offer of Information on Seif

The International Criminal Court rejected Thursday a request by slain Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi's daughter to give information about her brother Seif al-Islam, who is wanted for crimes against humanity.

ICC judges said the application by Aisha Kadhafi was aimed at obtaining permission to contact her 39-year-old brother rather than providing the court with information on the accused, as she had claimed.

Mexico Charges Canadian, Others in Gadhafi Son Plot

A Canadian woman held in connection with an audacious bid by a son of ex-Libyan strongman Moammar Gadhafi to smuggle himself into Mexico has been formally charged, along with three alleged accomplices, an official said Wednesday.

Mexico's Assistant Attorney General Jose Cuitlahuac Salinas said authorities charged Cynthia Vanier, a Dane and two Mexicans on January 28 for attempted trafficking of undocumented people, organized crime and falsifying official documents.
