Prime Minister Najib Miqati stressed on Sunday that “we will not allow any side to meddle in our affairs,” saying that Lebanon will not once again be turned into an open ground for other powers’ disputes.

He said in a statement on former minister and MP Michel Samaha’s arrest: “The judiciary will follow through on the matter to the end.”

The Vatican has completed with the Lebanese authorities the program of Pope Benedict XVI’s visit to Lebanon in September, reported the daily Ad Diyar on Sunday.

It added however that Vatican authorities are “beginning to study the possibility of postponing the visit over the dangerous situation in Lebanon and the region.”

Arab foreign ministers postponed a planned meeting on the Syrian conflict that had been due to take place in Saudi Arabia later on Sunday, a top Arab League official said.

The March 14 camp is seeking to take judicial action against former minister and MP Michel Samaha, who was charged with planning attacks in Lebanon, reported the daily An Nahar on Sunday.

Informed sources told the daily that the camp will attempt to persuade President Michel Suleiman and Prime Minister Najib Miqati to suspend diplomatic and official ties with Syria in light of revelations that Samaha had sought to carry out the attacks at Syrian orders.

French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius is scheduled to arrive in Lebanon on Thursday on a two-day trip where he will meet with senior officials, reported the daily al-Mustaqbal on Sunday.

It said that the Syrian developments will be at the center of his discussions, with the French minister stressing the need for Lebanon to provide aid to Syrian refugees despite the Lebanese government’s policy of distancing itself from the events in its neighboring country.

German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle said he wants Syrian leader Bashar Assad to stand trial at the International Criminal Court, which tries genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity,

"The best thing would be for Assad to appear," at the court based in The Hague, he told German Sunday newspaper Bild am Sonntag.

A French cargo plane carrying tons of aid supplies and medical equipment for Syrian refugees landed Saturday in Jordan for tens of thousands of Syrians who fled their country's violence.

The Antonov aircraft is carrying 80 tons of medical and support equipment and more French supplies destined for Syrian refugees will be flown to Jordan soon, the head of the operation, Colonel Yannick Rio, said.

U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon is pushing for a U.N. presence in Syria after its observer mission there ends to support mediation efforts, diplomats said Saturday.

In a letter to Security Council members, Ban suggested several options for maintaining an "effective and flexible presence," according to a diplomat who spoke on condition of anonymity.
