Death Toll in Nigeria Emir Attack Rises to Five

The death toll in a gun attack on the convoy of Emir of Kano, an influential Nigerian Muslim figure, has risen to five, the police said, as the monarch and his injured sons flew out of the country on Sunday.

"The interim chairman of Kura local government and his driver were also killed by some gunmen who pursued them from the scene of the attack" on Emir Ado Bayero, Kano police spokesman Magaji Majia told Agence France Presse.

Merkel Party Leads Key State Vote but Majority Uncertain

German Chancellor Angela Merkel's party was in the lead Sunday after the first state poll of a general election year, initial results showed, but the race for a ruling coalition rested on a knife-edge.

Preliminary results from Lower Saxony on public television showed Merkel's Christian Democrats leading with around 36 percent and their current coalition partners, the Free Democrats, with about 10 percent. The Social Democrats had about 32 percent and their favored allies the Greens 13 percent.
