العاملة الإثيوبية التي تعرضت للضرب في وسط الشارع انتحرت في دير الصليب
Read this story in English
When servants become lords, this is what happens. They forget they were once servants.
Hang the thugs who drove her to this point. But then how can some be hung while others like world renowned criminals Geagea and Jumblat who killed tens of thousands and drove many to the point of desperation are roaming freely and fu....ing our ears with their almost daily filth? HOW? HOW? HOW?
Even if there are indeed lots of violations against human rights in Lebanon, including Lebanese women's rights, it is a shame when media and individuals use generalizations without scientific field researches showing the diversity of situations and cases.
Humiliation both internally and outside for we Ethiopians looks like food and drink of a daily meal. Oh Alem am broken for you.
First off, i agree with the fact that domestic workers in Lebanon should be treated with respect and decency. With that said, we have a bunch of ignorant people in this forum who have the audacity to stereotype an entire civilization on the basis of what they read on a news website. It really says alot about your capabilities to think for your own instead of being brainwashed and tricked into believing what you only hear in the media. Grow up, and start using your God given gift of a brain to look at situations from more than one angle. For instance what’s the story of the employers?.? did you ever think of that? or are you happy with you tunnel visioned view of life. I am Lebanese, and we have had house keepers for many many years, and we never treat them in the way that some other heartless individuals do. But believe me when i say (Continued)
as good and as respectful as you treat certain (not all) house keepers, they still do numerous wrong deeds! Our most recent house keeper (who appeared to be such a good girl, very polite and decent, we all really liked her), but all of which was stealing thousands of dollars from under our nose. All we did when we found out was deport her, but im sure you can agree that she deserved to be prosecuted!. The point is, that their are two sides of the story, and don't judge such an honorable society like the Lebanese by reading something on the net. If you were put in the same situation as some Lebanese go through with the house keepers, you may even behave worse!
wooooowwww , you are so blind ... and i feel sorry for your lack of humanity!
by the way you are doing exactely the same by generalising "housekeepers" aren't you ?
pfff what a sad world
I am sorry
But did i hear you say - she was stealing thousands of dollars (assuming during an extended period of time)....what you are taking us for fools.
Who keeps thousands of dollars laying around for anybody to pick up.
And explain to me how the stealing of such huge sums of money was recurring without you even noticing. I am sorry but i am finding it hard to beleive your story.
I know some maids Steal - But this story of yours just doesn't make any sense.
There is nothing that justifies the beating. Those involved should be tried to the full extent of the law. Having said that, Lebanon is NOT a civilized country. One of the first basics to have a civilized community is to have law and order. In Lebanon there isn't law or order. Look at the traffic, look at the religious freedoms, look at judicial system, etc.
Just because there are three classy restaurants open downtown, does not necessarily mean, the population is civilized.
When it comes to racism, Lebanon ranks #1. When it comes to human rights and political rights, Lebanon is not on the list. When it comes to lifes basic needs, such as water, electricity, etc. Lebanon does not have the infrastructure.
The bottom line is this. Just because we say we are civilized does not necessarily mean we are.
i wish i would find a single dump fucking Lebanese/ any arab male or women on the streets of addis and i will finish them
I am not defending this guy... but guys please, do not stereotype lebanese... this man is a low life, and people standing there doing nothing are worse, and if I had it my way, I would have sent him to prison where the inmates would take good care of him... then he would have a taste of what this women been into...
you are right his is a low life, but the reality is, a big percentage of Lebanese people treat those workers inhumanely
no one can deny that we have a racism problem in Lebanon, I'm not saying everyone is racist

It is true that there are many Lebanese families who treat their maid as their own family. God bless them! It's shocking to see a couple of coffins arriving at Bole International Airport in Addis Ababa EVERY DAY from Lebanone. This case is a single sad event. Maid abuse is of course systemic in Lebanese society. The story is when to stop it!
We donot believe the Lebanon,It is their second time from the burning of ethiopian Air Lines.I think Lebanon Hospital is Hanging center. We have to work to Isolate Lebanon from the World. The Ethiopian government has to take Action.UN and USA has to list Levanon as terrrorist List.
Those satan lebanese, you will reap what you sow. We will retaliate those who live in Ethiopia. Soul for Soul.
I thought they killed her or persuade to do that, especially when she have two kids, that's another.....................please let us act together for our honor.
Starting the date when I saw the video footage, I am following how things going. This is very sad story in human history. Now how I can believe the statement made by the Hospital. Alem committed suicide. I am in doubt there may be conspiracy in ending of the deceased life. This needs genuine, impartial investigation that provide international community, particularly victim family that how the incent suicide was happened in the psychiatric hospital, known as Deir al-Salibwhere supposedly strong care is given. My heart is seriously broken by this young women abuse...death.
It is the failure of Lebanese government to assign police around Ethiopian consulate as mentioned by Ethiopian staff of the consulate. As an Ethiopian it is saddning phenomena. I don't hate all Lebanese people, but in most cases our sisters in Lebanon are being brutally beaten and treated. Are these people savagae and sadist ?

Congradualtions the Lebanese people, you can at least toast for that. If your country can't be known for anything good in any other field you can at least be leading the world for torturing, abusing and slavering some lonely women from africa and south asia. Bunch of Animals.
Lebanon would be paid its price for such grand human right violation. I think most of them are racists and enjoy with the poverty driven housmaids going there from my country. God will see and take action that tells them he is ruling.
The most inhuman and most numersous cases of savage treatment of domestic workers that I have heard have taken place in Lebanon. That tells you what a bunch of heartless barbarians the Lebanese are. Is it in their blood to treat their fellow beings like this? May God hand out the same fate of terrible treatment to their sons and daughters around the world!
Lisanu(guest)
I have read the bad news what had happened on Alem Dechasa in Lebanes where racists, barbarists and evils live. They are evils who are happy in doing evil actions. What would happens if they simtimes did goods.God bless the evils to live in peace for hollies.
The Lebanese are the worst race in the world, I'm ashamed to tell somebody that I was born in Lebanon, such a nightmare. In the place were I live at this moment Chinese, Indians, Pakistanis are more welcomed than Lebanese, it's terrible. Everybody hate Lebanese.
Maids in Lebanon are SLAVES, SLAVES, SLAVES..... with no day off. Remember the 2006 war, many maids left Lebanon and all those snobby lebanese women were left without maids!!!!! Wow! it was the catastrophe of the century. Do you RENEMBER??? You are far from beeing a civilise country!!! Snob and arrogant and not an ounce of humbleness!!!! that's what the Lebanese are!!! Wake up and TREAT YOUR DOMESTIC HELPERS with RESPECT.
There should be a law that imposes a punishment on the Lebanese who brutally and inhumanely treat these domestic workers, and it should be to send these thugs to a country whose language they do not speak and whose population does not speak any other language and let them push these low lives around and treat them like dirt for 5 straight years.
Am sad and angry.May God forgive these savage-desert dwelling-arabs.Don't tell me about stereotyping.
Government respond to Public/Civil society demands.
If there isn't enough Lebanese public pressure on the government to do something - then why would the government bother.
Don't kid yourselves - Most Lebanese prefer to keep the domestic worker status as is - they don't want the government to intervene.
Yeah sure you will see an outcry from time to time to such heinous crimes committed. But in genreal the majority of Lebanese don't see imprisoning the maid - prohibiting them from taking a day off - not paying them on time - or even beating them from time to time - as something abnormal. And that's the real problem.

don't generalize all lebanese pls cz i work for a very good family and they treat me very well.been working for 12 years with the same family and never had any problem with them.the problem starts with the country of origin and the agency, the hosting country,s government doesnt have anything to do with the agreement between the employer and the agency, they just issue the visas.the country of origin,s government doesnt even know who those girls are gonna work for.believe what i said.
Some are citing stories that happened to them, specially the thousand dollars stolen , which i also think is hard to believe... Even if she did steal those huge sums of money, i mean , when you show to somebody lots of money wondering around the house, somebody that left its family and country to come work for a salary that isnt 20% of what you spend per month, how do you expect them to stay neutral? Many Many lebanese families treat their domestic helper with no respect to human dignity. These people that beat her up in front of everybody should be beaten in public by ethiopan authorities, they will feel whats it like to be impotent...
The problem is multifaceted and it needs immediate solution. Such grand human right violation is becoming a common practice on maids in Lebanon. Now is just high time to work for the solution from UN, human right subsidiary, the Lebanon Government and all countries of who send their citizens to Lebanon. There should be a decree on this matter and stiff public prosecutors should be there to enforce and breach of the human right law.
@ FlameThrower, I respected your honesty at the begning and lost it when yoo start justifying his actions by saying he did this because .....Do you believe anything this guy had to say after this video? If she tried to kill herlsef, do you even ask why after you see this video? to the new story that is coming from Lebanon about her stealing money???All I can say is Stop It!!!!!!! The doctors that needed tosteal her organs,, how much money is worth????
whatever the reason was, and whatever the case and the true story is..behaving in such a cruel way with foreign housekeepers is a crime ..i agree that some housekeepers are bad they might steal, they might runaway, but if your housekeeper is bad..just return it to the agency and let them trasfer back to her country....no need to correct her in your violent way
we ethiopian known how we have hospitality for foreigner specialy arabs know us, but they are animals in their country,Let God revenge them about those Ethiopian house maid innocent blood
I haven't read all the comments above, i don't want to...
I agree with the fact that we Lebanese are racists and fanatics... and that we donut know how to treat human beings...
We all know Alem is not the first Ethiopian to '' commit suicide'' in Lebanon, or the first one to be abused or to have her basic human rights refused to her.
And even though this is sad beyond words, it is an unfortunate reality. One that a few Lebanese are in vain trying to change.
But until we become human, and civilized,
All I wish for, is for you Ethiopians to stop sending your women to Lebanon. Your wives, daughters, mothers and sisters are better off next to you in Ethiopia.
So instead of threatening us Lebanese, and using all kinds of words ( which I understand, and which we deserve), don't let the women in your surroundings go to the Arab countries in search of work..
I hope someone will start doing something form inside towns and villages in Ethiopia in order to stop this,
