U.S. President Barack Obama stressed on Wednesday commitment to promoting Lebanon’s stability and supported the Lebanese people in their effort to form a new government as the U.S. marks 30 years since the deadly Marine barracks bombing in Beirut.

In a statement on the anniversary of the attack that left 241 Americans dead in 1983, Obama condemned the “despicable act of terrorism,” which was the deadliest single-day death toll for the U.S. Marine Corps since the World War II Battle of Iwo Jima.

“We join with the families and their loved ones in paying tribute to the fallen and in sharing our deep appreciation for the ultimate sacrifice made in service to our nation. We also honor the courage and bravery of those warriors who survived the attack and spent days digging their brothers out of the rubble,” he said.

A ceremony will be held at the U.S. Embassy in Awkar and Marine Corps Commandant Gen. James Amos will speak at a memorial bordering Camp Lejeune in North Carolina.

Many of the 241 Americans killed on Oct. 23, 1983, were members of Camp Lejeune's 24th Marine Amphibious Unit.

A suicide truck-bomber attacked the military barracks Beirut that was home to a U.S. peacekeeping force. The bombing was blamed on Hizbullah.

Obama renewed “commitment to promoting Lebanon’s stability, sovereignty, and independence and to our partnership with the Lebanese Armed Forces.”

“We continue to support the Lebanese people as they seek to form a government that reflects their aspirations and that will strengthen Lebanon’s ability to defend its national interests and meet its international obligations,” he said in the statement.

lol @ "despicable act of terrorism". Reagan had called it a "despicable act" at the time, obongo added "terrorism" because that the trendy word to add these days.
but here's a tip to fight "terrorism": keep your troops at home instead of trying to occupy other countries, they would be much safer there.

I dont know what you're talking about. I know facts are flexible for you guys, but what you just described doesnt correspond to any actual event.

Thumb _mowaten_ 23 October 2013, 17:14

cant you read even your own links?
it says 20 dead, you said 40
it says islamic jihad, you said hezbollah

as i said, what you described above didnt match actual event. neother the 1984 US embassy bombing, nor the 1983 US embassy bombing

Thumb _mowaten_ 23 October 2013, 17:44

I care about being precise on facts, sorry about that i know it's not in your habits.

There were a total of 23 dead, including 6 Lebanese employees, 15 Lebanese civilians and others, and 2 Americans.

Among the 15 qualified "civilians and others" were a certain number of kataeb militiamen who were guarding the embassy.

anonyme for the love of whatever it is you love, i beg you, do a minimum of ****ing research before posting!

first, your clue is dead wrong. in 1984 the embassy had already been moved to awkar. you're confusing with 1983 bombing which was in west beirut.

second, what you call tiny details are for me facts, which i rely on to make an opinion.
you say <40, mainly civilians>, when it is <20, mainly militia/cia/embassy staff>. that is not a tiny difference.

now if you want to call it terrorism, go ahead, i dont really care. but please tell me, if this here qualifies as terrorism, how would we qualify black saturday? a crime against humanity or a war crime?

Thumb _mowaten_ 23 October 2013, 18:28

as for the 1983 bombing, it was "63 people, mostly embassy and CIA staff members, several soldiers and one Marine"
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/April_1983_U.S._Embassy_bombing

you come here and blame hezbollah for war time operations on foreign agents and soldiers, claiming you care because civilians died. but when we tell you about the civilians were killed by either the kataeb or the lebanese forces, and which were hundreds of times more numerous than here, you suddenly stop caring, because you selectively "dont want live in the past".

oh and one last thing, if we call this terrorism, what do we call that?
"On 8 March 1985, a car bomb exploded between 9[1] and 45 metres[2] from the house of Islamic cleric Sayyed Mohammad Hussein Fadlallah in Beirut, Lebanon, in a failed assassination attempt allegedly organized by the American CIA and British intelligence. The bombing killed more than 80 people and injured 200, almost all civilians.[1]"

Phoenix I'm sure you know as well as we do what the extremists in Syria meant when they said Lebanon's Christians and Shias would "be next". That was at the very beginning, long before HA took part in any operation inside Syria (nearly two years passed between those threats and the Quseyr battle)

Taking out thousands of extremist fighters massing at our border, throwing rockets into Lebanon and raiding border villages is part of defending the country.

The truth of of the matter is that US Marines partook in the daily fighting and clearly took side with one faction against the other. They were no peacekeepers; I was few mikes away before the 2 explosions rocked the City... I left the country few days later, which will mark my 30th anniversary being away from the land I love

Few miles that is...

Obama mocks the october 23, 1983 bombing of Beirut Airport. It was the warning sign that has been ignored ever since. Bashir Gemayel warned in 1981 that unless the problems visited upon Lebanon were solved in Lebanon, they would spread to the region. The US did not listen. Beirut Airport happened and the US withdrew giving Hezbollah/Assad/Iran its first victory over the US toward creating its "Arc of Resistance"

Thumb beiruti 23 October 2013, 16:02

Then came all of the rest until we get to the untenable situation for the Syrian people in Syria itself and Assad is employing the same tactics to repress his people as he used to repress the Lebanese Christians and Sunni in Lebanon, only 10 times worse and again the US does not learn the lessons of Beirut Airport 23 October 1983.
This event, now 30 years old is honored in words only. In deeds, the event is largely ignored which will insure that this type of thing will recur many more times, only worse with each recurring event.

terror is in their DNA

Thumb LEBhasNOhope 23 October 2013, 18:26

momo- they are helping the regime that ordered samaha to plant bombs in Lebanon in order to create a civil war. your propaganda is getting quite stale. Clearly, Lebanon is the least of your concerns.

Thumb LEBhasNOhope 23 October 2013, 18:58

Southern- ask yourself these two questions.
1. how many deaths have these so call takfiris that you claim will come to Lebanon later have caused in LEBANON?
2.How many deaths Has the SYRIAN REGIME caused in LEBANON?

Thumb LEBhasNOhope 23 October 2013, 19:21

ok southern. so everything else does not matter? a bit narrow minded thinking, wouldn't you say? clearly, someone that has the best interest of their country in mind would act polar opposite of how HA has been acting. Is it not obvious?
