Qabbani Blames Extremism on Attacks on 'Moderate' Dar al-Fatwa, Failure to Resolve Islamists' Case

Grand Mufti Sheikh Mohammed Rashid Qabbani said Monday that extremism rose in Lebanon over the failure to resolve the file of Islamists held in Roumieh prison and attempts to topple Dar al-Fatwa's “moderate role.”

“The file of Islamists has been one of the reasons for the rise of extremism,” he said in reference to suspects, who were arrested during Fatah al-Islam’s battles with the Lebanese army in the northern refugee camp of Nahr al-Bared in 2007.

The spirit of vengeance grew among them over the years, Qabbani said in an address to the Lebanese.

“The attempts to topple the moderate role of Dar al-Fatwa was another reason,” he said.

“We reject turning Dar al-Fatwa into a tool in anyone's hands,” he said in a veiled reference to al-Mustaqbal movement, whose ties with the Mufti deteriorated over the years.

Qabbani urged the Lebanese to form an all-embracing cabinet and make sure to elect a president on time.

“Beware of vacuum,” he said, adding “be keen on your nation and its moderation.”

Qabbani supported national unity and called for dialogue to resolve the country's crises.

“Our Constitution, which is based on the Taef Accord, hasn't been placed to organize the division of shares. It has been placed to have participation,” he said in his address. “Our coexistence includes everyone.”

Addressing Arab and Islamic leaders, Qabbani said: “You should salvage your countries from fighting and destruction … You could salvage the future of your countries and prevent foreigners from imposing solutions on you.”

“Those foreigners are plotting attacks to diminish the powers of the resistance and divide the region into weak sectarian states,” he warned.

The U.S. succeeded in creating infighting in these countries but it would not emerge victorious, he said.

Qabbani urged the Lebanese to confront the plot and find consensual and centrist solutions to salvage the nation before it was too late.

Such a plot aims at making Israel the hegemonic power in the region, he said.

“As Arab nations are engaged in infighting, Israel builds more Jewish settlements, brings in more Jewish immigrants and expels the Palestinian landowners,” the Mufti added.

Please Flamethrower, no need to be hostile. I was merely asking my dear friend Southern if he were an expatriate working overseas. I noticed you have a tendency to always attack me regardless of your mood. Please, Flamethrower, We all come here to learn of the news, to debate, and to grow. Kindly, stop harassing me.

BTW, Southern California is a great place, Flamethrower. Have you ever been there? Have you ever been on a plane or train in your life? I am going back home mid to end February.

dear @southern, I am always the one for adhering to the topic at hand. I was merely asking if you were an expatriate to learn how much support the Sunni Mufti of Lebanon enjoys among Shia expatriates.

Grand Mufti Sheikh Mohammed Rashid Qabbani: Foreigners are plotting attacks to diminish the powers of the resistance and divide the region into weak sectarian states.

Now listen to this man!!! Religious people should only be concerned with religion. He supposedly represents a sect the vast majority of which rejects the notion of resistance.

“We reject turning Dar al-Fatwa into a tool in anyone's hands,”
Hariri, Siniora, Mikati, Hoss and Karame plus PM designate Salam never all agree on anything except that Qabbani should step down stemming from his involvement in the financial mismanage of Dar al-Fatwa funds dating from 2010 and for turning Dar al-Fatwa into his personal tool..

Another Lebanese leader, this time a religious leader who just cannot understand that he has long since overstayed his welcome. Using that old broomstick of blaming radicalism won't take him far. Those he accuses as being extremists are in fact moderates, but for his lack of understanding it when people keep telling him gently to leave, now they are shouting it directly to him, leave!! Those he accuses, if they were extremists, then he wouldn't be here talking.

Southern, believe me brother, it is never difficult to take the pulse of people that are in leadership positions. In the case of GM Sheikh Kabbani, we being in little Lebanon and we knowing each other so well, what I can deduct, well at least from my own experience lately is this: that most of our Sunni siblings want him out, and do you want to know the reasons? Because they feel that he is too close and too subservient to Hezbollah and the Syrian regime. The mood in Lebanon these days is not that forgiving either, maybe we ought to listen to those you termed as silent majority, as far as I felt their pulse, the opinion is very clear.
