Five Syrian nationals were arrested in the Akkar town of Shadra on Tuesday for entering Lebanon illegally, state-run National News Agency reported.

Members of the Lebanese joint border security force arrested “at a checkpoint on the southern entrance of the Akkar town of Shadra five Syrians who had sneaked into Lebanon through an illegal border crossing … in Wadi Khaled,” NNA said.

The five men were referred to the relevant authorities for further investigations, the agency added.

On Monday, the Lebanese army arrested two Lebanese and 19 Syrians in Wadi Khaled for attempting to illegally enter Lebanon.

A Kalashnikov rifle, two guns, ammunition, 30 mobile phones, a laptop and various foreign currencies were found in their possession.

Since the eruption of the uprising in Syria in March 2011, security forces and the army have arrested a number of gunmen and individuals who sought to enter Lebanon illegally.

The un-demarcated Lebanese-Syrian border has facilitated the flow of gunmen to and from Syria.
