Reports: U.S. Warns Lebanon it Would be Harmed if it Rejects Syria Sanctions

The U.S. has sent a stern warning to Lebanon that “it will be hurt” if it doesn’t commit itself to a new U.N. Security Council resolution imposing sanctions on Syria over its violent crackdown on protestors, Beirut dailies said.

Al-Liwaa newspaper on Tuesday quoted U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs Jeffrey Feltman as saying that if the Council imposes sanctions against Syria, “then Lebanon should commit to them and if it doesn’t it will be hurt.”

Feltman held talks with Premier Najib Miqati in New York on Monday after a similar meeting between the Lebanese prime minister and U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton at Lebanon’s office at the U.N headquarters.

As Safir daily said that the seven-minute meeting between the two men came as part of the U.S. pressure on Lebanon over the Palestinian U.N. bid. Lebanon is the head of the rotating presidency of the Security Council for the month of September and has backed the Palestinian effort to win full U.N. membership.

A U.S. source told An Nahar daily that Clinton stressed to Miqati that Lebanon should be committed to its international obligations and mainly the funding of the Special Tribunal for Lebanon that is set to try ex-Premier Rafik Hariri’s suspected assassins.

“Lebanon should be cautious in dealing with the situation in Syria and not to allow Syria to impose on it a rejection of sanctions against Damascus,” the top U.S. diplomat told Miqati, according to the source.

Clinton hoped that Beirut would steer clear of the situation in Syria “because it would be the best choice for Lebanon at this stage,” As Safir quoted her as saying.

Diplomatic sources also told al-Liwaa that the Secretary of State made an indirect warning to the Lebanese government saying its bias would “do you big harm.”

we do not need to do anything but wait:
- the tribunal will clarify who are the murderers of Lebanese officials.
- the international community is watching this government so if they slip ...

we have our work cut out for us, so the end result will soon come, and they syrian regime will implode, and hizbullah too.

Which is worse ? Reminding Lebanon of its Obligations to the world community By Mrs. Clinton & Mr. Feltman or Hijacking an entire country (Lebanon) by a bunch of Mercenaries, Thugs, Murderers, Thieves, Outlaws, Criminals... and the list goes on, called HIZBUSTAN, Fulfilling the orders of their "Basij" & "Shabbiha" Masters.

the filthy zionist miltiia has no problem when usa comes and threatens lebanon. of course, a patriotic lebanese would have a problem knowing that is was usa bombs falling on lebanon and killing civilians including children.

p.s. when you see someone comparing southern lebanese with "basij" and anything else iranian, it's a signature of zionist information war department.

and they claim they are lebanese, what a joke.

Lets get one thing straight... They are not threatening Lebanese.. They are threatening Hezbollah and Farsi speakers in Lebanon including Farsi speakers in government, meow-waten, jabal-farsi and littledig, and Bashar worshippers.

To the Farsi speakers on this site, please do not include Lebanese citizens when referring to "we"... You chose to separate from the nation to form your own Persian country in the south...

it is clear hizbustan and their followers are on the edge wehn we see the above comments :)
they are starting to realize their days are counted.
their nasrallah threatening israel of retaliation in case iran is attacked shows clearly they act in the interest of iran, thus they are traitors to Lebanon.
as traitors they will get what they deserve soon.

Lebanese democracy is an ancient one, Lebanese are more human and more unique to understand by your zionist allies and soon they will control all the world finance and oil. Like it or not you need a new strategy and allies more reliable enable to become more popular in the region, Lebanon is your key, why because Lebanon AlRahi is the real Imam, priest and Rabi. Think what is good for the American people.

there is actually a possibility that some of you are not part of zionist information war department but are just crazy lunatics.
or they are both.

like aragorn...see what kind of constructions he creates to accuse me of working with zionist entity.

Jabalamel...

only zionist around here is you...

Rahi said to rid Israel of excuses to smash Lebanon.
That means, you and your buddies are providing the excuse for Israel to smash Lebanon.

You provide the motive for Israel. That is how you facilitate the Zionists bombing us.

That makes you the only Zionist in the room..

Mr Cannanite,

The Lebanese proverb says Sit crook but talk straight....
You Don't like Aoun it's your right but putting his picture upside down has three possible explanations
1- You lost the sense of orientation
2- You use your hands to walk
3- You like to provoke your opponents and create unnecessary problem
If it's the first case i think your problem is not major you just need to visit the nearest clinic most likely the problem is within the ears...
If it's the second case ...........call 911 . The problem is between the ears
If it's the third case i can honestly tell you that you are not acting like man ...
U wanna do something than do i t right..Put yourself together and face people rather than acting like the graffiti juveniles because you only disrespecting yourself…Son don’t be like the hopeless case called Shab
