Iran Confirms General Killed in Israel Strike on Syria

Iran confirmed Monday that a general of its elite Revolutionary Guards died in an Israeli strike on Syria that also killed six members of Lebanon's Hizbullah.

"General Mohammad Ali Allahdadi and a number of fighters and Islamic Resistance (Hizbullah) forces were attacked by the Zionist regime's helicopters," said a statement on the Guards' website.

"This brave general and some members of Hezbollah were martyred," it said, adding that Allahdadi was in Syria "as an adviser helping the Syrian government to confront takfiri Salafist (Sunni extremist) terrorists".

Shiite Iran is Syrian President Bashar Assad's main regional ally in his war against the mainly Sunni rebels seeking to overthrow him.

A source close to Hizbullah earlier told AFP that six Iranian soldiers, including commanders, died alongside six of its own fighters in the attack, but the Guards made no mention of other losses.

The raid, near Quneitra on the Syrian-controlled side of the Golan Heights on Sunday, enraged Hizbullah's supporters, but analysts said the group would seek to avoid a major escalation with Israel.

Hizbullah officials said Jihad Mughniyeh, son of the group's late commander Imad Mughniyeh, would be buried on Monday afternoon in Beirut's southern suburbs. Massive crowds were expected.

Once solely focused on fighting the Jewish state, Shiite Hezbollah is now deeply involved in the war in neighboring Syria, where it backs Assad.

The six fighters killed on Sunday afternoon were carrying out a field reconnaissance mission in Mazraat Amal village, Hizbullah's Al-Manar television said.

An Israeli security source confirmed a helicopter had carried out a strike against "terrorists" in the Golan who were allegedly carrying out an attack.

Who gives a damn about Mughniyeh's son. Mughniyeh was the biggest terrorist in the world. He was the most wanted man and responsible for more American deaths before 9/11.

This strike does not make sense. Iran is in talks with the Group of 6, including the US, and it seems to be going well. Why would Israel want to jeopardise these negotiations and wouldn't the US react to that. Obama threatened to veto any new sanctions on Iran voted by congress. This strike is worse and it could light up the region.
This Israeli strike, if it did happen, is a pure provocation. Iran and Hezbollah have not moved against Hezbollah for quite some time and have much wider problems at hand.
There could be four reasons for this strike:
1

Thumb Machia 19 January 2015, 19:06

1- The nuclear talks are faltering and some aggressive action was needed
2- Iran and Hezbollah are putting in place an attack platform in the Golan
3- Israel wants the nuclear talks to fail
4- This is part of the rapprochement with the US and those Hezbollah and Iranian commanders were killed in various operations against ISIL and Al Nusrah in the last few weeks. Israel did Hezbollah and Iran a favour and inferred that they hit a convoy in the Golan that carried all these important personalities, thus making them martyrs and heros.

Thumb freedomarch 19 January 2015, 19:36

Isreal and Obama are not on excellent terms when it comed to the iranian nuclear idsue.

Moderator, are you approving all these pro-Israel comments?
I remind you Lebanon did not sign any peace agreement.
Please have a shred of decency.
