Gemayel Urges Factions to Address Presidential Elections in their Dialogue

Kataeb Party MP Sami Gemayel welcomed on Monday the dialogue between the Free Patriotic Movement and Lebanese Forces and the dialogue between the Mustaqbal Movement and Hizbullah, hoping that they would address the deadlock over the presidential elections.

He said: “We hope that these talks would set the elections as a priority.”

He made his remarks during a press conference after the Kataeb Party's weekly politburo meeting.

“At a time when people in the region are staging revolts against their rulers, Lebanon enjoys a constitution, but we have decided to resort to an unconstitutional mechanism to elect a president,” Gemayel added.

“We have also invited foreign powers to interfere in our affairs to help end this impasse,” he lamented.

“We cannot blame foreign powers for our failure when we are the ones who have abandoned the constitution,” Gemayel said.

The MP accused some parliamentarians of thwarting the electoral process by violating the constitution and refraining from taking part in the polls.

“This is unacceptable. Reaching power is not a goal, but serving the people should be this aim,” he stressed.

“The factions are more concerned with finding alternatives to the president at a time when the region is being fragmented and torn apart by extremism,” he noted.

“We have started to resort to gimmicks to maintain the proper functioning of the country in the absence of a president,” the MP continued.

Lebanon has been without a president since the term of Michel Suleiman ended in May without the election of a successor.

Disputes between the rival March 8 and 14 camps over a compromise candidate have hindered the polls despite 18 electoral sessions being held.

I am the_roar: I am a regular poster on naharnet. I have 20 fake accounts and I live on this forum 24/7. I make fake accounts and insult people when I have no argument or debate. I am a Shia who pretends not to speak Arabic and claims to live in Australia. I know every street in Lebanon and every MP's name despite my claim that I am 3rd generation Australian and having never been to Lebanon. I tell people I don't post on weekends to give them the impression I have a life. I lie and lie and lie and think people believe me. I also post as @wolf, @lebpatriot , @my2cents, among others.

Any reason you used to attack the FPM idea of allowing the people to vote directly? or do you think you know what democracy is better than everyone else?

Thumb the_roar 16 February 2015, 19:07

The FPM would love nothing better than to be audited , but make sure every other party is audited also.

The FPM are the only party that has continually called for auditing every party & leader.

Maybe you should consult the M14 leaders to see if they approve of your plan first.

Truth is that it is time time amend and re-write the Constitution of Lebanon. All political position at national level should be open to anyone from any religion or sect. Period!

There are at least 7 millions Lebanese outside Lebanon. The very vast majority spit on the Caporal and on Ebola.
They should be allowed and must vote in any future election!
Do you remember the proposed law by the FPM (Nehemtalla Abi Nasr) that the 7 millions can vote for 10 deputies only?
Yes, the Caporal is a traitor and a destroyer of the Christians.
