Rifi: We Have Dealt a Major Blow to Michel Aoun, Hizbullah

W460

Justice Minister Ashraf Rifi declared Sunday that the rivals of Hizbullah and Change and Reform bloc chief MP Michel Aoun dealt them a “major blow” in the latest political confrontation over military promotions and appointments.

"We have turned the page on the so-called promotions battle, which ended with a major blow to Michel Aoun and Hizbullah,” said Rifi during a sport event in the North.

“We told them that the state will always emerge victorious,” he added.

Rifi also stressed that “Aoun and Hizbullah's demands are not an inevitable fate that we must bow to.”

In response to a question, the minister reminded that he had announced the “clinical death” of Prime Minister Tammam Salam's government.

“The Lebanese, especially political leaders and the heads of parties, must realize this and exert efforts to rescue Lebanon,” he added.

Rifi also called on all officials to pay attention to the “dangerous regional situation” and to “steer Lebanon clear from the region's blaze as much as possible.”

The thorny issue of military and security appointments is one of the main points of contention paralyzing the cabinet's work.

Aoun had been lobbying for the appointment of outgoing Commando Regiment chief Brig. Gen. Chamel Roukoz, his son-in-law, as army commander.

But Roukoz reached the age of retirement on Thursday after the failure of a proposed settlement that would have kept him in the military and made him eligible to lead the institution in the future.

Rifi was among several ministers who rejected the so-called settlement.

Southern I know you know why he is carrying the gun but you ignore the truth to spread your personal hatred. Minister Rifi appears in the photo announcing the start of a Marathon for handicapped people in the North just like they do on any sporting event.

Missing peace 18 October 2015, 17:36

Thumb _mowaten_ 18 October 2015, 18:55

Great picture, Rifi looks like am unwashed mafioso, and that's closer to his true character than the uniform he dishonored during decades.
This guy now speaks of state institutions as if he ever cared about them, remember when he mutinied against Ziad Baroud? Remember when m14 tried everything they could to keep him past his expiry date? They clinged on for months to prolong his mandate and eventually decided to name him "justice" minister. He didnt care then about retirement age, but now he does?
All of M14 were shaking in their boots at the idea of having a real man of honor such as Rukoz in front of them, one they can neither intimidate nor buy off.

Thumb justin 18 October 2015, 17:11

texas, that is not the point. The point is someone trying to paint Rifi as an outlaw brandishing a gun in public, which is not the case. He is announcing the start of a sporting event that was aired live on TV.

Justin
You are stating a true fact. This photo is misleading and should have not been publised. I saw Rifi when he was doing his declaration, he was wearing an ordinary dress.

Thumb _mowaten_ 18 October 2015, 19:03

if he was wearing a dress it must have been a at private party like the ones they have in the gulf.

Thumb _mowaten_ 18 October 2015, 19:04

Thumb beiruti 18 October 2015, 19:13

Aoun, typically, allowed his tactics to defeat his strategy with regard to the Roukus appointment. He delayed, and delayed, blocked and obstructed until finally poor Roukus got too old to be appointed to the position that Aoun's strategy dictated. The tactics of delay and obstruct for the purpose of nothing more than to delay and obstruct are at the end of the day destructive. Just ask Roukus.
Now to threaten to delay to obtain leverage in a give and take negotiation, well that's smart use of power, but to delay and obstruct for no other purpose, it is the act of a fool or a servant to another's agenda. Aoun this is your name.

I guess hassan mishnassrallah did not carry out a mutiny against the government, the president and the Baabda declaration when he said " soak the declaration in water and drink it" and sent his terrorists to kill indiscriminately in Syria, Iraq, Yemen among other places. Is Aoun still demanding what he was? Obviously not since it is no longer possible. Now the only reason your government is not falling is Hezbollah does not want it too. . Rifi is also an old corrupt and partisan man. He should retire also. Standing in the street, pistol in hand , like a thug, shooting his mouth off. Only in Lebanon. Go look in the mirror. Without Aoun and Hezbollah there is no government and there is no governance in Lebanon. Sad but true.

Thumb -phoenix1 19 October 2015, 13:17

Mowaten, M14 did not paralyze the country, but the prime instigator Hezbollah did. After countless repeated attempts of good faith towards Hezbollah and the M8 side it leads, one cannot blame the M14 side of not wanting to trust M8 nor Hezbollah any more. So now the real culprit sadly is the lack of confidence that reigns between the two opposing sides, neither is willing to concede any ground, thus the paralysis that is now suffocating Lebanon. For Lebanon to break free from this predicament, a new president must be elected now, then a new parliament and a new cabinet, otherwise the growing misery of the people will cause a major upheaval, if not today, tomorrow, but it will happen in due time, especially when the wall of fear is brought down.
