Skiing: Shiffrin Wins World Cup Slalom Finale

Mikaela Shiffrin of the United States won the women's slalom race at the alpine skiing World Cup finals series in St Moritz on Saturday.

The reigning world and olympic champion in the discipline produced a superb first run to lead by 00.72secs and she then dominated the second leg to win by over two seconds.

Second place went to Veronika Velez Zuzulova of Slovakia with Sweden's Frida Hansdotter in third.

Shiffrin's victory was a fitting end to the season for the undisputed slalom queen who missed five races due to a knee injury from early December to February.

That meant she could not win the World Cup slalom title which went instead to Hansdotter.

The overall World Cup crystal globe was secured last week by Switzerland's Lara Gut ahead of injured American Lindsey Vonn.

"I am happy because I was able to ski well and win another slalom," said 21-year-old Shiffrin who won her 20th World Cup race, 19 of which have come in slaloms.

She is unbeaten in World Cup slalom racing since February 2015

"I am happy for Frida but at the same time I can't help but feel a bit disappointed in my heart of hearts."
