Report: Ahead of FPM's Street Protests, Security Forces Tell Aoun Stability a Red Line

Lebanon's security forces informed the Free Patriotic Movement and parties planning for streets rallies later this month that tampering with the country's stability is “impermissible,” al-Liwaa daily reported on Wednesday.

Security Forces told the FPM and the parties concerned, that tampering with the street is not allowed whether through blocking the roads, or constraining the free movement of citizens or attacking the ministries and public departments, according to the daily.

The warning has been conveyed to the officials in the FPM because of the dangers posed to the country with the return of threats and fears of terror operations that could target stability, as they assured that security is a red line in Lebanon, added the daily.

In the same context, sources have attributed to Speaker Nabih Berri that he has warned against street protests and that he has called on the FPM to reconsider their plans to escalate their moves.

The Change and Reform parliamentary bloc announced last week that it has started mobilizing for street protests on September 28 and October 13 as part of its escalatory steps that are aimed at pressing the other parties in the country to “abide by the National Pact.”

FPM chief Jebran Bassil has threatened that the FPM would “topple the government” through street protests if the other parties do not heed the movement's demand regarding “partnership” and the National Pact.

The FPM, which has the biggest Christian bloc in parliament, has suspended its participation in cabinet sessions and national dialogue meetings over accusations that other parties in the country are not respecting the National Pact.

The 1943 National Pact is an unwritten agreement that set the foundations of modern Lebanon as a multi-confessional state based on Christian-Muslim partnership.
