Qaouq: New Electoral Law Only Way to Rescue Lebanon, Hizbullah Seeking to Resolve Obstacles

Hizbullah central council official Sheikh Nabil Qaouq stressed Thursday that the approval of a new electoral law is “the only solution and only way to rescue Lebanon and immunize it from the threats to its political, economic and social stability.”

“The Lebanese are still clinging to the positive atmospheres that followed the meeting of the three presidents in Baabda and Hizbullah calls on all political forces to benefit from these atmospheres in order to finalize the new electoral law,” Qaouq said.

“Hizbullah is determinedly working to resolve the few remaining obstacles,” he noted.

“This path should be continued through understanding and positivity in order to spare Lebanon any threat to its stability at the political, economic and social levels,” Qaouq went on to say.

The country's main political parties have recently agreed that the new electoral law should be fully based on proportional representation and 15 electoral districts but they are still wrangling over the electoral system's mechanisms and technicalities, especially those related to the representation of sects.

Lebanon has not organized parliamentary elections since 2009 and the legislature has since extended its own term twice. The second extended term will expire on June 20.
