U.N. Special Coordinator for Lebanon Sigrid Kaag on Wednesday extended her “deep condolences” to the families of Lebanese soldiers kidnapped and executed by the terrorist Islamic State group.

“The servicemen will always serve as a symbol of courage, commitment and dedication to their country. The Special Coordinator also extends her condolences to the Lebanese State,” Kaag's office said in a statement.

The Special Coordinator also commended the Lebanese Army and security forces in their “continued efforts to safeguard Lebanon’s stability, security and territorial integrity, including from the threat of terror.”

The troops were officially announced dead earlier in the day after the release of the results of DNA tests.

Their remains had been recovered last month after a military offensive by the Lebanese army on the eastern border.
