Cabinet 'Open' to 'Turning East' Economically, Won't Renew Sonatrach Contract

The government on Thursday expressed openness to economic cooperation with “Eastern countries” such as China, Iran and Russia, in the wake of calls in this direction from Hizbullah chief Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah.

“There was unanimity on being open towards everyone in a manner that achieves the country’s interest,” Information Minister Manal Abdul Samad said after a Cabinet session, responding to a reporter’s question about the matter.

Energy Minister Raymond Ghajar meanwhile said that Cabinet decided not to renew the contract with Algerian oil company Sonatrach following the latest controversy over a ship carrying counterfeit fuel to Lebanon’s power plants.

“The book of terms has become almost ready and we are discussing it with the procurement authority,” Ghajar added.

Cabinet meanwhile approved a proposal from the Education Ministry to reopen universities and technical institutions to complete the academic year and conduct exams in the wake of the coronavirus lockdown, while observing “all the health and precautionary measures.”

Too swift for them, they make us agonize slowly so the should feel the same. Death by drowning at high tide.

I honestly see no difference between seeking Loans from USA and co. and accepting funds from China and co. MONEY IS MONEY

Thumb libanaisresilient 19 June 2020, 05:11

Oh Okay sorry, there's a BIG difference here, China couldn't care less about militias seeking to eliminate Israel from the face of Earth!

Thumb thepatriot 19 June 2020, 14:42

Ps: And for all idiots out there who want to see Israel "eliminted from the face of the earth"... be my guest! Go fight them... unlike ebola cowards.
And why do you hate them so much already?
Jordans seem ok with them... as well as Egyptians... or Emiratis...
Only the Lebanese idiots who want to "free Jerusalem" seem to want a war with those guys... instead of just ignoring them and living in peace like the others...

Thumb whyaskwhy 19 June 2020, 15:21

And Lebres we do not care about Israel or Palestine or Zanzibar they do not care about us either. Lets get of the old "arabismic" roundabout here we have nothing to gain to continue this campaign of war with anyone. If you truly felt compelled to fighting the Israeli's then you would not be here but would probably be 6ft under by now so quit selling us that old story of we have to help liberate anything when our country itself is under Iranian rule.

Did China or Iran offer to help? Can they? (especially Iran)
Do you think that China or Iran that have Huge freedom of expression issues are ideal partners?
Of course that they will ask counter actions.. as IMF does.
IMF and the USA basically tell you: "you want help? Fine. Dissarm Ebola, live in peace, we will help you out".
What will Iran ask? "keep harassing Israel, attack Jerusalem, let one sect (chiaa) dominate the others in Lebanon..."
Honestly... I would rather have Ebola turn into a political party, and receive the aid of the IMF, the support of the US to our Army, and live a better life...

Resiliant Iran has been effectively in Power since Syria brought Clown back to Lebanon. They have not only failed managing their own finances in Iran but also their dabbling in Syria and now Lebanon. Iran itself needs an economic stimulus. China has been a very tough on nations it has provided economic support too and do not for one second think that Lebanon will get a good deal from them check and see what happened to the other dictatorship in Venezuela or the ling list of African states that have fell trap to Beijing's help. As for Russia last I checked they were in conundrum with the last regime they helped (Syria) and their rubble keeps tumbling especially with the low cost of oil so they will not be running with their Balalaka's offering help. Historical our best solutions usually come from inside as they are not tied to foreign countries influence in Lebanon. We have tried todate help from Syria, Iran,KSA, Isreal, USA, Europe and look at where it got us.

It is Ira's responsibility to shore up the Lebanese economy -- they are Hezbollah's principal backer. I don't see China making the investment (its economy has its own problems now) and Russia doesn't have the money.

Thumb whyaskwhy 19 June 2020, 20:47

You maybe waiting to find a day that does not end with a y before Iran helps out lol
