Phalange: Govt. Failure to Allow Expats to Vote May Force us to Question Legitimacy of Elections

The Phalange Party questioned on Monday the government’s ability to allow expatriates to vote in the 2013 parliamentary elections.

It said in a statement after its weekly politburo meeting: “Its failure to grant them such a right may force us to question the legitimacy of the electoral process.”

The party therefore voiced its support for all Lebanese to be granted citizenship and the rights that come with it.

Furthermore, the politburo also questioned the government’s ability to reach an agreement over the electoral law in time to even allow expatriates to vote.

Allowing them to vote also requires the completion of diplomatic appointments to enable expatriates to vote at Lebanese embassies, it continued.

Cabinet last week approved a mechanism that allows expatriates to vote in next year’s parliamentary elections.

This is one of few points I hail Kataebs stance in...

All Lebanese, including the expats should be able to vote. In future, I think we should even adopt a part of the French system, letting in representatives of the expats in the parliament.

There are 15 million Lebanese outside of Lebanon, at least 10 million of them have not been to Lebanon in the last 50 years, they have not paid any taxes in Lebanon or have anything to do with Lebanon.

Why should they be the ones who decide who rules Lebanon a country of 4 million? They will not benefit from a good politcian or pay the price of bad politciians (like the kataeb).

Leave it to the Lebanese to decide their own fate.

But Expats ARE allowed to vote. We read it last week, and it's at the bottom of the same article?!

Even embassy websites started adding info for expats to register.

We know the opposition is looking for anything to trash the current government. But let them at least be true.
