The Army Command announced on Friday its arrest of two Syrian nationals who confessed to the killing of Maronite monk Elie Jerji al-Maqdessi.

It said that Anwar Hassan al-Rabih confessed to committing the murder at the region of Ain Aanoub with Mohammed Mustapha al-Qatit.

They first robbed the monk and then strangled him to death.

They then placed him in the trunk of his car and headed to al-Naameh region where they dumped his body.

They left the scene in the victim’s vehicle and the next day, they sold his mobile phone.

The Army Command statement added that investigations with the criminals revealed that they were in possession of false identification cards and that five other people, who have already been arrested, are likely linked to the crime.

In addition, it said that al-Qatit confessed to stabbing to death Luciano Siranossian on September 13, 2011 in order to rob him.

He said that he had accomplices in the crime.

Maqdessi, 51, was strangled to death with a rope, the National News Agency reported on Sunday, after his body was found Saturday morning on the seaside road in Naameh.

The monk of the Bhersaf Monastery in Northern Metn originally hails from the Bekaa town of Hawsh Hala.

The rope used to kill Maqdessi was found near his body which was taken to Siblin Hospital, NNA said.

The body was later handed over to the monk’s family.

Al-Jadeed television noted that the monk was not wearing a religious costume.

Later on Sunday, Interior Minister Marwan Charbel said in an interview with al-Jadeed that the slain monk had arrived from Belgium 10 days ago.

Charbel said that the security agencies have made some progress in the investigations, noting that there is no sectarian motive behind the crime.

Very good question. The syrians were always free to do whatever they want to the lebanese. What would be more interesting, are they regime supporters or rebels. Either way, they will be always bad news to Lebanon.

They and many million more Syrians are the product of Hafez Al Assad's policies in the 70's 80's up to his death.

We always KNEW that.

90% of crimes are committed by Syrians in Christian areas. Implement A VISA SYSTEM WITH BACKGROUND CHECK OR Deny them admission. END OF STORY.

I am against capital punishment in principle. But for syrians and palestinians committing cold blooded murders to steal money in a country that has welcomed them... I dont know anymore.

Look at the face of this good man.... killed by these criminal aliens. RIP Eli Jurgi. I know you would forgive them for they know not.

I agree and likewise lebanese who comitt coldblooded murder whether in lebanon or outside should also face the capital punishment. There are lebanese who kidnapp french young women and sell them to slavery even though france welcomed them (among other serious crimes including murder and theft). No need to turn it in to a racial thing. Us lebanese have plenty of barbarians and murderers as does the rest of the world. By the way, this priest was of Palestinian origin. I have neighbours who are related to him. R.Ip victims of injustice.

Deportation is the only option for these criminals, whether they are Palestinian, Egyptian or Syrian back to where they came from.

Missing nizar_beirut 31 August 2012, 19:53

Actually yes, plenty of times.

Poor man, what he did to deserve this. Lebanon is not a country it's a ghetto filled with thieves . I'm sure not all Lebanese are not like this but why do you generalize about palestinians and syrians. These are guests in your country I hope is real bombs you again so all you haters can become refugees and see how feels. I don't condone these criminal acts. They should be killed in public square so that others think before they do these heinous acts.

Elie is my cousin. What a tragic loss and senseless killing. How long are we supposed to put with these animals in our country? How long?

lebanon_first, are you one of those who suffer racism for ever? I really feel disgusted when I read your comments which are always full of hatred. All people regardless of where they come from should be treated the same under the law, we are not in a jungle

Thank you cleric mansour for your sermon today. Now please tell us why God punished lebanon? Was it because maronites like you were carving out crosses on the bodies of old men? Or because you were shooting civilians with guns that had the image of mary on them? Or because you raped women and kids before hacking them to death while wearing the cross as a neckless? If you want to point fingers, make sure your own house is clean, which it isent so siddo.

Just like the al-jadeed murderer, those people will be freed one day or another because they are Syrians, the allies of our current gov. Btw, Aoun, Berri, Nasrallah, Jumblatt all have blood on their hands, yet they are free people! this isn't any different.
