The Army command said Thursday that the military arrested al-Meqdad clan's spokesman under the order of Gen. Jean Qahwaji during a “delicate” operation.

“Under the instruction of Army chief Gen. Jean Qahwaji, an intelligence unit was able to arrest Maher al-Meqdad during a delicate and swift operation in Beirut's southern suburbs that did not involve any shooting,” the military's communique said.

The suspect is being interrogated by the judiciary on the kidnapping spree of Syrian and Turkish nationals, it added.

The Army has so far seized at least 5 people involved in the kidnappings.

The Army freed on Tuesday the remaining four Syrians kidnapped by al-Meqdad clan during a raid in Beirut's southern suburbs. The clan later set free Turkish businessman Tekin Tufan.

The clan went on the abduction spree over the kidnapping of Hassan al-Meqdad in Damascus last month.

The Army has been raiding neighborhoods in Beirut's southern suburbs since last Friday.

you guys are talking as if he was arrested against Hezbollah's will. Hezbollah is trying to preserve civil peace to protect its government.

There cleaning up for the baba, I'm sure that he won't do that long inside, maybe get caught spying and they get released. They only hold you if you for long time if your a wahbi or salafi. But I do hope they put this dog with all those guys so they can teach some manners

Sunni: when you have hostages the thing is delicate. You don't arrest the appointed spokesperson of the kidnapping group or the negotiator.

One month for 100% succcess is not at all long. I takes time to locate where are kept the hostages and organise the night time raid in Dahieh. It's a great achievement, full stop.

Default-user-icon NR (Guest) 14 September 2012, 08:47

Guys... this is only a mascarade. They made a deal.
Lebanese army arrest the Meqdad clan and free the hostages (al mou7afaza 3ala haybat al dawla). Then the FSA free in return the lebanese hostages (including al meqdad). After a while , all the meqdad in prison will be released.
I m surprised that anypne is fooled by all that. why Hizbulla agreed to let the army in the dahieh ? why al meqdad are not firing a single shot ???!!!! it's all a deal

Thumb lebanon_first 14 September 2012, 15:55

I hope you are wrong NR. But I wouldnt be surprised if you were right. bear in mind that the HA MP had a fight with the mcdad clan 1 month ago...

Thumb thepatriot 14 September 2012, 10:42

Oh really spartacus!!??
So this should be the image of the state you wish to promote. You smile and kiss the kidnapper until he sets free the hostage, or you storm the kidnapper setting the example of NOBODY messing with the state!

Al meqdad , a bunch dumb inbreds, this proves the security forces aren't as incompetent as they sometimes seems, I pretty sure theynknow who behind all the previous assassinations and kidnap pings for the past ten years in Lebanon, they can triangulate and determine persons last locations by mobile, don't think that's too hard to guess who is protecting the criminals, it's like the head of the monster

Thumb benzona 14 September 2012, 13:31

yalla yalla, boukra jeye 3a Saida. :)

Missing peace 14 September 2012, 13:30

oh! this just prove how hypocrit the gvts are... they are unable to arrest people wanted by the TSL but quickly can arrest another one in dahiye... as if they only act with the authorization of the hezbollah...
poor weak lebanon

Default-user-icon bigdaddykane (Guest) 15 September 2012, 12:32

this is all politics...the Lebanese people are all safer because the gvt was able to handle the situation diplomatically, could have been a huge problem.
