Report: At Least 18 Lebanese Figures Face Assassination Threat

Several Lebanese figures are targets of possible assassinations, reported al-Joumhouria newspaper on Thursday.

A widely informed western diplomatic source told the daily that at least 18 Lebanese officials are being monitored, urging them to take the greatest precautions to protect themselves.

It explained that these figures not only include prominent officials, but others that do not enjoy as much influence and media exposure.

He said that the targets include Lebanese Forces leader Samir Geagea, head of the Mustaqbal parliamentary bloc MP Fouad Saniora, former Defense Minister Elias al-Murr, Internal Security Forces chief Ashraf Rifi, MP Butros Harb and a number of Mustaqbal lawmakers, most notably the Sunni ones and former MP Fares Soaid.

In addition, said the source, every potential presidential candidate from the March 14 camp who enjoys strong popular support is also an assassination target.

The source revealed that it had relayed this information to one of Lebanon's politicians, requesting that it in turn be relayed to the potential targets in order for them to take the necessary precautions.

It warned that the assassins may resort to new murder techniques that had not been adopted before, such as booby-trapping an elevator as had happened in the failed assassination attempt against Harb in July.

Internal Security Forces Intelligence Bureau head Brigadier General Wissam al-Hasan was killed in a car bomb on Friday, raising fears that the phase of assassinations in Lebanon had returned.

The March 14-led opposition and Progressive Socialist Party leader MP Walid Jumblat blamed Syria for Hasan's crime.

Geagea was the victim of a failed attempt on his life in April and Murr was the victim of a failed attempt in July 2005.

Partition is the answer.

If we remove the politicians, I believe the Lebanese people will be able to sit down with each other, drink, eat and dance. They are good people unless polarized by the political parties which incite hatred.

What if March 14 imagine a counter-attack and outplay Israel in order to prevent killings? By example, each time one of them wants to take the road, he can ask a March 8 official to accompany him. Thus Israel will never attack him and he will be as secure as if he was hiding in Switzerland.

No partition... This land does not belong to the likes of ali baba nasrallah and his cohorts and thugs... It is our land and they should be the ones to get their rear ends to Iran if they don't like our civic way of life... Love Lebanon or Leave it... The Lebanon as Camille Chamoun and Gibran Tueini saw it...

The Palestinians are here to stay and there is nothing that can be done about it Einstein... And that senile idiot residing in Rabieh who you worship can't build a sand castle... The world is witness to his sorry assed achievements in 89 and the deadly damage and mayhem he caused to Lebanon and his troops back then... He got no place in a future Lebanon but he is most welcome in the mental ward at Deir El Salib...

so why don t your hezbi friends ask the syrians to hand the official documents proving shebaa is lebanese and not syrian so it falls under UN425? why doesn t your orangina ask from his friend bashar these documents? the issue is simple but they prefer shebaa to be occupied to justify their weaponry...

Thumb primesuspect 25 October 2012, 18:57

Dream on!

To find tout who carried out the attacks against m14 figures, just ask who's Syria's hand in Lebanon and you'll get the answer.

Thumb ghada12 25 October 2012, 20:03

Alexander, that's thinking outside the box!

Thumb geha 25 October 2012, 08:50

hizbushaitan is targetting all adversary popular figures so they can win the elections. clear enough.
they are just murderors and thugs trying to take over the country in favor of executing the syro/iranian plans.
they are traitors, and we need to regain our country from these traitors.

They might use VOO-DOO as a new murder techniques that had not been adopted before....

There is a great need for all of us to re-align ourselves behind Al Sayed and Hizb so we can foil all these terrorists attempts. Once Bashar takes care of matter in Syria, he will also be able to help us out along our brother in Iran.

Very strange that only pro-March 14 politicians are targeted. Very strange that while they are accused of executing Israeli policies, they are eliminated one after the other. Very strange that Wissam Eid and his chief Al Hassan both accused of falsifying telecom data's to implicate Hezbollah were both eliminated. Very strange this civil strife that Israel wants to create by only eliminating her allies! How can all this fit in the logic of some people?

Missing peace 25 October 2012, 12:46

yes FT in mode stupid as usual... he doesn t care if lebanese are killed as long as they do not belong to M8, a true patriot indeed, tfeh!

Default-user-icon Alexander (Guest) 25 October 2012, 12:47

FlameThrower, are you serious? What will Israel gain by killing they precious allies here, especially that they are working against Hezbolla? Ya3neh once Geagea, Gemayel, Rifi, etc are all killed, Israel will be stronger and March 14 victorious? w aslan chu 3emellon Al Hassan ta ye2etlou?? Why don't they kill one or 2 March 8 members?? I guarantee for u that it will be 10 times easier to ignite civil war by killing from both camp. I am sure u do not believe what u just wrote. I am not talking politics, but using a minimum logic.

Default-user-icon Alexander (Guest) 25 October 2012, 14:19

Well i will not fall into arguing but your answer does not tackle my practical points. Chu khass Bachir wlo. It was in a very different phase of history and its motives are clear. I am talking about the systematic elimination of a camp accused of serving Israel while the other one is not targeted. I do not seek to convince you, but although i do not belong to any camp, i am not able to find any explanation of what is happening other than those i wrote above. Read again my points and try to provide just one point. Why is it easier for you to believe in the "big game" rather than to suspect Syrians and their allies? Heik you eliminated this option just because you are pro M8?

Missing peace 25 October 2012, 22:43

"like peace for example, when he says M8 dont care about the dead as long as they are not M8."

if they cared they wouldn t defend the regime that gives the orders to kill! so they are morally accomplices, if not physically, and bear the responsability of innocent blood on their hands, like you...

Missing freeforever 25 October 2012, 10:38

Hizboshayatan is supported directly by the USA and even Israel, Lebanese will never will this war. When they finish the M14 list they start on the M8 list with Syria and Iran blessing. May god help us.

It is time that the forces of good, march 14th that is, learn that you can't turn the other cheek... An eye for an eye should be their new MO... Modus Operandi... Shoot your would be killers first and ask questions later... Starting with the Judas Michel Samaha and his cohorts and they are all well know...

Hizboshayatan is the biggest evil that existed in this world. They are the terminal cancer for Lebanon, they destroyed our beautiful country and ruined it. What sort of country is Lebanon to allow the picture of Khomeini to be at the airport instead of its president ? I can not understand

what a shock--the anti-syrian politicians are the ones being targeted. this is the main reason why it is better for us as a country to make peace with israel so we can concentrate on the real enemy--syria and its allies/mercenaries.

Missing freeforever 25 October 2012, 13:40

Syria Iran Israel are just different face of the same currency

Missing samiam 25 October 2012, 22:03

It really amazes me that the Syrian and Iranian got nothing interesting happening on their land so they try occupy their time with Lebanon. This means that we Lebanese are more important people than their citizens.

Thumb ghada12 25 October 2012, 20:13

it's a funner game in Lebanon because in their country, the game is already fixed and they don't even have to use intelligent tactics, they can just kill you in front of people or jail you for life....In Lebanon, they still have to be sneaky because it seems that big words and big bombs don't have the same "surrender" effects on us

Default-user-icon mazen (Guest) 25 October 2012, 16:08

In civilized countries, the likes of Switzerland and Norway, those named in this article and many more of our 'politicians' and 'law makers' would be thrown behind bars for the crimes, fraud, theft, etc that they have committed. They would be deprived of their civil and political rights. Unfortunately justice is served through car bombs in our underdeveloped country.

Default-user-icon zouzou (Guest) 25 October 2012, 23:19

partition?! waw... did you see any viable plan for that?
