Lebanese University contract teachers announced on Monday that they will hold a sit-in throughout the night near the presidential palace in Baabda to demand that President Michel Suleiman, who is currently abroad, resolve the case of their full-time employment.

They urged him to approve their employment during the cabinet session scheduled for January 3.

Contract teachers council member Jinane Jabbour said during the sit-in: “Is it acceptable that this issue remain unresolved for over five years?”

Addressing Suleiman, she asked: “Why is our full-time employment being linked to the appointment of faculty deans?”

“Wasn't a decision over the full-time employment approved in 2008 at a time when no deans were appointed?” she noted.

“Targeting the Lebanese University harms the whole of Lebanon and is a violation against the teachers, which in turn harms the students,” she stressed.
