Two Clerics Assaulted in Khandaq al-Ghamiq, Army Arrests Attackers

Dar al-Fatwa clerics Sheikh Mazen Hariri and Sheikh Ahmed Fakhran were beaten up on Sunday while passing through the Beirut area of Khandaq al-Ghamiq, state-run National News Agency reported.

They were transported to the Makassed Hospital in Tariq al-Jedideh for treatment, NNA said.

As the news broke out, angry protesters blocked roads in the Beirut areas of Tariq al-Jedideh, Qasqas and Corniche al-Mazraa, as well as Sidon's entrance in the South and al-Masnaa's road in the Bekaa.

Grand Mufti Sheikh Mohammed Rashid Qabbani urged calm and restraint after the attack, stressing that the perpetrators “will not go unpunished.”

“We urge calm and restraint to enable security forces to investigate the incident,” Qabbani said in a televised address.

“We have full confidence in security agencies and the state, but we will not let things go unpunished,” the mufti said.

“We will not allow these elements to achieve their goals,” Qabbani stressed, declining to accuse any specific party.

Later on Sunday, the army managed to arrest three people involved in the attack in Khandaq al-Ghamiq, Interior Minister Marwan Charbel announced.

The army also arrested two people accused of assaulting Sheikh Omar al-Imami in the Beirut suburb of Shiyyah. He was transported to a Chtaura hospital after receiving first aid at a Beirut hospital.

Meanwhile, Hizbullah and AMAL Movement condemned the attack on the clerics, describing it as an attempt to incite strife and stressing that the perpetrators must be arrested and punished.

Lebanon is suffering. One assassination such as Killing Asir would have the safe effect it did when they killed maroof saad in 75. We know what followed.

Thumb geha 18 March 2013, 07:47

totally correct

Thumb geha 18 March 2013, 09:05

it is well documented so you shut up. do your homework, we are not here to do it for you. same for the 2 sheikhs in akkar: who killed them?
go play in your corner.

and who kidnapped the imam in bekaa last week and took him to an ASSad prison?

Thumb geha 18 March 2013, 07:47

wether khandak el ghamik or shiah are under amal/hizbushaitan total control.
yesterday hizbushaitan voiced their support to kabbani (by the way: who are they to meddle into sunni affairs?)
s guys: you make up your minds on who did it?
I have been saying it and repeating it: hizbushaitan want to create sectarian strife to justify their existence and control the country militarily if they cannot control the government.
it is all about control.

Of course it was amal. Even the thuggery on may 7th in beirut such as smashing windows and cars and other vandalism was made by amal thugs with the permission of hezballah. Amal thugs should be expelled and their citizenship should be withdrawn.

The lebanese should make themself less flammable by reducing the sectarian rhetoric and concentrate of what is good for Lebanon. then no one could ignite anything....

Thumb geha 18 March 2013, 07:49

tell that to hizbushaitan and fpm!

The problem is that the Sunnis are getting crazier and crazier in addition to being filthier than filth. What can you do with crazies and filth? Do as the Americans do: kill the bastards before they kill you. Period.

Assir sudden appearance, trouble in Tripoi, now in Beirut, all this indicates that some 5th column is active to create havoc between sunni and shia. Who has an interest in this? Syria/Iran/HA could benefit from this situation in order to give some free hands to HA in Lebanon and Syria.

change your name asap no one is buying it, and 7aje tetzaka please, this is not the first nor the last and im afraid it is too late, they will catch few people and then let them go after some time from the back door, they let go fayez karam for god's sake, did they catch the people who killed hariri? is hayek under arrest? what about the sheikh who was killed in north lebanon on the lebanese army checkpoint? what happened there? the list is too long and the grievance is too deep, and the thirst for vengenace is pretty high, im being realistic. Killing hariri, 3eedo, wesam 7assan, chu baddak t3id? and now joining the regime in syria in killing syrian sunis, they left no room for moderation and give it few months and they will be fighting nusra not in 7umus but in bekaa. Allahy yer7amak ya rafic hariri.

It is comforting to see that the attackers were caught immediately tonight but shocking to know that so far we haven't heared of any serious arrests in the Aarsal case. I salute the Lebanese army for tonight but can't stop worrying for the Aarsal case. Regardless of their affiliations trouble makers should be stopped.

Missing mohammad_ca 18 March 2013, 14:03

really? name a sunni family with an armed military wing and a spokesperson.

Missing mohammad_ca 18 March 2013, 18:18

my comment was in reply to your comment ya zaki. you are comparing sunni "criminals" to "transgressing" shias. your choice of words are foretelling. and, no, until the 4 suspects in hariri murder trial are handed over then your statement holds zero merit.

The authorities should release more information about who the perpetrators were, if they were following orders and their motives.

The greatest threat to peace is the lack of information as rumors thrive.

Having said that congratulations to the army for apprehending these criminals quickly.

Missing helicopter 18 March 2013, 07:36

Agree mckinl. Good job on apprehending the perpetrators and now the courts and investigation should be given some time to reveal who is behind it. Punishment to the extent of the law should be in order. Meanwhile we commentators have the responsibility of resorting to reason and and refrain from what might stoke the fires of war. Remember wars do not start overnight, they are preceded by lots and lots of agitations.

"Pity the nation whose statesman is a fox, whose philosopher is a juggler,
and whose art is the art of patching and mimicking.
Pity the nation that welcomes its new ruler with trumpeting,
and farewells him with hooting,
only to welcome another with trumpeting again.
Pity the nation whose sages are dumb with years
and whose strong men are yet in the cradle.
Pity the nation divided into into fragments, each fragment deeming itself a nation" Khalil Gibran
