State Commissioner to the Military Court Judge Saqr Saqr charged on Friday a number of Lebanese for their involvement in the recent attempt to smuggle arms in the Shouf area of Ain Zhalta.

He charged 14 Lebanese with shooting at the army and smuggling arms in the region.

Six of the suspects are in custody, while the remaining eight are accused of firing at the army and they are still at large.

On Sunday, the army issued a communique revealing that it thwarted an attempt to deliver arms to “extremists” in Ain Zhalta.

A gunman was killed and eight others were arrested, while a soldier and a member of the armed group were wounded, said the statement.

According to the Army Command the armed men were arrested overnight Saturday.

The seized cache of arms contained "heavy-, medium- and light-caliber weapons and a large quantity of ammunition of various types," it added.

What about the soldiers killed by the FSA-Al Qaeda terrorists in Arsal? How come the Lebanese army hasn't gone in to Arsal and arrested the murderers? Where is the justice for those who sacrificed their lives for Lebanon?

Good , now that they arrested make an example if them, throw the full weight of the law.... To the extreme since they themselves are extremist fanatics , let them beg for mercy first & then hang them , Downtown Beirut & televise it live !! It should be mandatory if you shoot at the Lebanese Armed Forces.. Hang the bastards in Public!!!!

it is insane. who is defending this poor people? they can never be charged or convicted.. hizbullah is doing the exact same thing and the law has to be equally applied or not applied at all! hizbullah cross the border as they wish with their weapons, kill syrians and come back! so what gives the lebanese army the right to attempt to arrest these noble people. either apply the law to everyone or do not apply it at all!

Just for a moment ..IMAGINE no one had a weapon, and someone is not happy with a certain person. would they fight it out like men used to do Good old boxing match. LOL I cant see it happening but anyone with a weapon is able to cause havoc to any persons they want gone. NO civility anymore. A good argument can never be had again, should anyone be upset by even the slightest of comments they are wasted. I am sure all the jails are over crowded as it. Would the death penalty come into affect in the future for people ANYONE is found guilty in a court of law.. Comments please.

BEIRUT, Lebanon 2013 iloubnan info— A Lebanese military court investigative judge on Wednesday charged a former government information minister and a high-ranking accomplice in the Syrian military of a conspiracy to kill Lebanese political and religious leaders and foment sectarian strife, recommending the death penalty for both.

It is difficult for people to reason with crime. When Myriam al Achkar was raped and murdered in 2011, the whole community mobilized asking for death penalty. People wanted justice and vengeance,” Ghali said.

Politicians, however, take a whole other stand on why the death penalty should still remain in Lebanon. Several ministers support a death penalty sentence for criminals that spy and collaborate with Israel. According to Ghali, the main arguments for the death penalty are to reduce crime and not thinking that Lebanese prisons are´t escape proof.
