Jumblat Slams Nasallah's 'War against Takfiris': Syrian Regime Uses al-Nusra to Execute Attacks

Progressive Socialist Party leader MP Walid Jumblat slammed on Monday Hizbullah chief Sayyed Hasan Nasrallah's description of Syria's war as a “fight against Takfiris,” accusing the Syrian regime of hiding behind the Islamist jihadist al-Nusra Front to conduct attacks in Iraq and Lebanon.

"President Bashar Assad's regime executed terrorist attacks in many locations, in Iraq for example, by claiming it was fighting occupation and it also released many al-Nusra members from jails upon the eruption of the Syrian revolution,” Jumblat stated in his weekly editorial in the PSP-affiliated al-Anbaa website.

"This reminds us of what happened with Shaker al-Absi and Fatah al Islam.”

Jumblat said that as a result of the “desperation created because of the international community's passiveness towards the crisis in Syria, many rebels might have joined the Front.”

"To a part of the revolutionaries, the Front has become the main resistance against the regime,” he pointed out.

"There is no doubt that the confusion created by suggesting it is either the regime or al-Nusra Front delays the consolidation between the opposition's groups and prolongs the regime's reign.”

Jumblat also criticized Nasrallah's description of the war on Syria as a “fight against Takfiris.”

"We ask God to forgive those that said it is a war against Takfiris knowing that he (Nasrallah) is aware of the Syrian people's righteous demands,” he said.

Jumblat continued: “The international community is to blame for the current situation in Syria as it failed to have a unified view on the conflict and on how to deal with it.”

During a speech he gave in May at a ceremony marking the 13th anniversary of Israel's military withdrawal from Lebanon, Nasrallah said the Takfiris are the “most prevailing group in the Syrian opposition,” warning against a defeat against them in the ongoing war in Syria.

He said: “If Syria falls in the hands of the Takfiris and the United States, the resistance will become under a siege and Israel will enter Lebanon. If Syria falls, the Palestinian cause will be lost.”

The Druze leader reiterated his support to the “Syrian people's revolution against injustice, dictatorship and oppression,” but stressed his rejection to all calls that refuse to recognize other religious sects.

"(Influential Muslim cleric Yusuf) Qaradawi's call to expiate Allawites is completely unacceptable and contradicts with Islamic Sharia,” Jumblat declared.

"Such fatwas (Islamic edicts) generate hatred and establish long-term sectarian conflicts.”

The opposition Jumblatt praises is almost tottally dependent of al Nursa/al Qaeda in Iraq. Without the Takfiris there is no revolution. Nasrallah says if Assad falls Israel is in Lebanon. This is almost certainly true. Jumblatt doesn't have to worry about this since he speaks the language of money. Nasrallah has differnt concerns so he is not blinded to the downside of the Sunni militias and the Muslim Brotherhod. Jumblatt should backtrack on this issue, can't have it both ways.

Jumblatt has spoken the truth clearly. Assad did empty his jails of Sunni fundamentalists so that they could participate against the Lebanese Army in the Nahr-el-Barid camp war several years ago.
As a survival technique, without much doubt, he has done the same in Syria. Released the Sunni Fundamentalists over which he has control to join the ranks of the FSA, thus splitting the Syrian Opposition between democratic and fundamentalist forces, and causing the international community to pause in giving assistance to a Syrian Opposition that may be fundamentalist or may be democratic. Assad killed two birds with one stone by injecting the Sunni Fundamentalists into the forces opposing his regime - he split domestic opposition and held off international aid to the opposition. This gives him the best chance for survival.

The fact that he now claims to be putting out the fundamentalist fire, is typical of the game played by the regime of arsonist and fireman.
The fact that Nasrallah says the fight is against Tikfiri is just miming the official line from Assad/Khameni.

well "you believe" incorrectly, he released "some" but then re-arrested many more.

@awireless. He should never have taken political prisoners. And when did he release all of those political prisoners and LAF personnel that his regime took and never released during the time of the Occupation? I guess he still has those rotting in some Syrian jail, unless he may have "disposed"of them so as to make room for more.

You may see irony, but I see complete consistency of every action taken by Assad with the one objective, the prime objective of regime survival. Release radical fundamentalists from your prisons if that will divide the Opposition. Keep them if they will harm the regime. Its decision-making all done in straight lines that, by misdirection, disinformation and obsfucation is made to look much more complicated than it is.

Josh, if your leadership brought peace and prosperity to syria, then why did so many syrians choose to come live and work in lebanon for minimum wage, no rights, getting beaten up constantly? If bashars syria was so good, then why did they choose this?

What is royal treatment according to you? if they cant even be given the right to choose their own leadership then how is that royal treatment? Even if it were true that they were given royal treatment, then that is the least the upsurper of their right to govern their own country since they are the majority can give them and it is nothing to be praised for. Of course, in reality we all know there were no royal treatment hence why alawite officers constantly threatened anyone willing to rise up against their filth with torture, rape and massacres. You saying that only criminals hate the government (which is as criminal as an government could get) prooves how out of touch you are with reality.

The prosperity brought to Syria was at the expense of the Lebanese. Lebanon was rich when Syria was poor, then after Syria's occupation of 30 years, Lebanon got poorer as Syria prospered. Also thugs in Lebanon prospered as well (this is how the Mafia works, the big shark gives the smaller sharks small piece of the bounty, while the good people go hungry.
