A colonel in the Libyan navy was wounded on Monday by a car bombing in central Benghazi, a security spokesman told Agence France Presse, calling the blast an "attempted assassination".
"The explosion was caused by a device attached to the car," Mohammed Hijazi said after reports of a white pickup truck exploding in the city center and bursting into flames.
"It was an attempted assassination," Hijazi said, adding that the officer was wounded in the blast.
Witnesses reported that the explosion was not large, and pictures posted on Internet social networks showed a minimal amount of damage around the vehicle.
Benghazi in eastern Libya was the cradle of the 2011 revolution that ousted the regime of Moammar Gadhafi.
On Sunday, two explosions outside the courthouse in Benghazi wounded 43 people, according to the latest health ministry toll.
The city last week also saw two army officers and a political activist killed.
