Caretaker Prime Minister Najib Miqati stressed on Wednesday that the army has proven that it meets the expectations of the Lebanese people in achieving a sovereign and free Lebanon.

He said: “The army has demonstrated that it is above all political disputes and their repercussions.”

He made his remarks in a statement on the occasion of Army Day, which falls on August 1.

“Regardless of their disputes, the Lebanese people are united in their commitment to the military institution, which is not only a guarantor of peace, but the Lebanese state as a whole,” added Miqati.

“We will not spare any effort to bolster the capabilities of the army in order to improve its ability to defend Lebanon and its people,” he declared.

“The army derives its strength from national unity and the people's support,” he noted.

“Recent developments have demonstrated that the army has overcome sectarian and social considerations,” concluded the caretaker premier.

Meanwhile, PM-designate Tammam Salam greeted the military institution on the 67th Army Day, saying its members "are shouldering grave responsibilities in protecting Lebanon's borders, security and the cohesion of its social fabric amid extremely difficult circumstances."

Salam stressed "the need to strengthen the army's capabilities and to embrace it to enable it to perform its national role in protecting all the Lebanese."
