Michel scored in the 53rd minute to give Valencia a 1-0 victory over Everton on Tuesday in the playoff for fifth place in the eight-team Guinness International Champions Cup.

Michel, returning to the club for the coming campaign after spending the last season at city rival Levante, controlled Aly Cissohko's cross from the left side with his chest, let the ball settle at his feet and fired his shot past Everton's Spanish goalkeeper Joel.

The goal held up even though Everton had more than one good chance at the equalizer.

Everton's best opportunity came shortly after Michel's goal, when Kevin Mirallas flicked a ball to himself, took off up the right wing and sent a cross that got through the box — but didn't result in a shot on goal.

Joel kept Everton within one when he made a point-blank save on Robert Ibanez in the 69th minute, coming off his line to deny the Valencia forward.

Also on Tuesday, backup goalkeeper Juan Pablo Carrizo saved two penalties then kicked one of his own to give Inter Milan a shootout victory over Juventus for seventh place in the International Champions Cup friendly tournament Tuesday.

The teams finished regulation level at 1-1, and needed 10 rounds of penalties to decide a winner. Both teams failed to score on their first round of penalties, then each converted their next eight.

Carrizo punched away Mauricio Isla's attempt to open a lead for Juventus in the 10th round. He then took what became the winning penalty, beating Juventus keeper Marco Storari.

Both teams scored in the first half as Ricky Alvarez found the Inter Milan and Arturo Vidal converted a penalty for Juventus.
