Charbel to Urge Government Action on ‘Security Chaos’

Interior Minister Marwan Charbel said Wednesday he will make several proposals during a cabinet session to resolve the security situation that is spiralling out of control.

In remarks to Voice of Lebanon radio (100.5), Charbel said: “I will propose to the government several plans to resolve the security chaos and let each minister assume his responsibilities.”

The March 14 opposition is set to take an “important” stance from the national dialogue that is set to be held at Baabda Palace next Wednesday, its third session since it resumed last month following a 19-month standstill, An Nahar daily reported.

U.N. Security Council Worried about Syria Fallout in Lebanon

The U.N. Security Council expressed concern Tuesday about fallout from the Syria conflict in Lebanon, diplomats said.

Tens of thousands of Syrian refugees have fled across the border and the Lebanese army has moved troops from the border zone with Israel to the Syrian frontier region, where there have been deadly incidents in recent weeks, U.N. officials said.

FPM Supporters Block Roads, March to Military Court to Demand Officers Release

The Free Patriotic Movement led by MP Michel Aoun on Tuesday staged a demonstration that headed from Beirut’s Mathaf district towards the nearby Military Court building to demand the release of three officers held in connection with the case of Sheikh Ahmed Abdul Wahed and his companion.

In Maarab, Gemayel Warns of Bids to 'Divide Lebanese into Supporters, Opponents of Army'

Phalange Party leader Amin Gemayel on Tuesday warned against any attempt to fragment the army or divide the Lebanese into supporters and opponents of the military institution, stressing that “what’s important is keeping the army away from these negative stances which do not serve the national interest.”

Speaking to reporters after a two-hour meeting in Maarab with Lebanese Forces leader Samir Geagea, Gemayel said: “We warn against this dangerous game that will fire back at its perpetrators and we have full confidence in the army which is shouldering its responsibilities during this period.”

Mustaqbal Slams Raad's Remarks on 'Liberation Strategy'

Al-Mustaqbal parliamentary bloc on Tuesday condemned remarks by MP Mohammed Raad, head of Hizbullah’s Loyalty to Resistance bloc, about postponing the debate over a defense strategy for the country until after the liberation of Lebanese territory still being occupied by Israel.

“Hizbullah has decided to ruin all the efforts exerted by President Michel Suleiman and a number of parties to discuss the rest of the controversial issues during the upcoming dialogue sessions,” the bloc said in a statement issued after its weekly meeting.

Lebanese Pilgrims Appear in New Video, Abductors Say Will Free Two Captives

Al-Jazeera television aired Tuesday a video it received from the abductors of 11 Lebanese Shiite pilgrims who were kidnapped in Syria in May, in which the kidnappers announced they will release two of the captives.

“In response to the appeal of the Muslim Scholars Committee in Lebanon, we will hand over two of the guests in our custody to their families under the supervision of the Muslim Scholars Committee in Lebanon and the state of Qatar,” the abductors said in what they dubbed “Statement Number 3.”
