Aoun calls Berri, Mikati over border deal with Israel

President Michel Aoun on Thursday held phone talks with Speaker Nabih Berri and PM-designate Najib Mikati to discuss with them the file of sea border demarcation in light of the final draft sent by U.S. mediator Amos Hochstein to Lebanese officials, the National News Agency said.

Aoun also discussed the matter in a meeting with caretaker Defense Minister Maurice Slim.

Berri to send MPs copies of border deal with Israel

Speaker Nabih Berri on Thursday asked Parliament’s General Secretariat to send all MPs copies of the sea border demarcation deal with Israel.

Berri added that the copies should be sent out after the agreement’s approval in Cabinet.

Berri adjourns presidential election session as FPM, Hezbollah boycott

A parliamentary session for the election of Lebanon's next president was adjourned Thursday to next week due to lack of quorum.

Only 71 out of 128 lawmakers attended the session and Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri called for another vote on October 20, to take place before Aoun's term finishes at the end of the month.

Bassil lashes out at 'traitors' and 'thieves' on Oct. 13 anniversary

Free Patriotic Movement chief Jebran Bassil on Thursday slammed Speaker Nabih Berri anew for setting a parliamentary election session on the date of October 13, which is highly sensitive for the FPM.

“We must respect the martyrs of each other and the anniversary, because on this date there were people who died for the sake of legitimacy and the homeland, whereas some were traitorous on this date and they have disrespected the anniversary,” Bassil said, after he laid a wreath on the monument of the unknown soldier.

Fayyad says Iran preparing treaty for fuel oil grant

Caretaker Energy Minister Walid Fayyad announced Wednesday that the fuel oil that Lebanon will receive from Iran for its electricity plants “will be a grant” and accordingly is exempt from “any sanctions.”

“We will follow up on this issue and we have received reassurances that it will move forward,” Fayyad added, after meeting President Michel Aoun in Baabda.

Aoun: Demarcation agreement to pull Lebanon out of abyss

President Michel Aoun on Wednesday described the sea border demarcation agreement with Israel as “a gift to the Lebanese people,” adding that it will “pull Lebanon out of the abyss.”

“The situation in Lebanon deteriorated a lot after the country fell into an abyss that wasn’t a coincidence, but rather as a result of actions and behavior that led it to the current situation,” Aoun said.

Presidential vote: Latest developments ahead of Oct.13 session

Parliament is due to convene on Thursday to elect a new President, two days after Lebanon reached a "satisfying" border agreement with Israel that could be signed before the end of President Michel Aoun's term of office on October 31.

The FPM said they would boycott the session on October 13, which marks the anniversary of Aoun's ouster at the end of the civil war in 1990 when the Syrian Army stormed the Baabda Palace, killing hundreds of Lebanese soldiers and civilians.

Nasrallah says Hezbollah to maintain readiness until deal with Israel is signed

Hezbollah chief Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah on Tuesday cautiously welcomed the Lebanese, Israeli and American declarations about an imminent sea border demarcation deal between Lebanon and Israel, noting that his group will maintain its military readiness until the final agreement is signed by the two sides.

“We are awaiting the declaration of the official stance by the president… We are awaiting the official stance of the enemy's government. What's important is what will happen tomorrow in the meeting of Israel's cabinet,” Nasrallah said in a televised address marking the Prophet’s Birthday.
