One thing you have to give them, though. By dragging out the conflict and seeding the rebel forces with Islamic extremists, Assad has created his own self fullfilling prophesy about the conflict. According to the US CIA estimates, there are 100,000 now participating in the Opposition. Of that number 1/3 are Islamic extremists who have no particular interest in Syria; 1/3 are Islami extremists who want to create an Islamic state in Syria; and 1/3 are moderate FSA.
As time goes on, the moderates shrink more and the extremist elements grow.

US CIA now says the only way to resolve this is diplomatically that leaves the Syrian Military and Mukabarat in tact so that when the war for the Regime is over, then the war against the Islamic fundamentalists can begin. Without the Syrian military or secret police, Syria will become a failed state.
Assad's survival gambit would have won with him still in control had he not committed the strategic error of gassing his people at Ghouta. This act has made his removal and trial as a war criminal an imperitive.
