Key Syria Opposition Group Refuses Geneva Peace Talks

A key group within the Syrian opposition National Coalition said Sunday it would not attend proposed peace talks in Geneva and would quit the Coalition if it participated.

"The Syrian National Council, which is the biggest bloc in the Coalition, has taken the firm decision... not to go to Geneva, under the present circumstances (on the ground)," Council president George Sabra told AFP.

"This means that we will not stay in the Coalition if it goes" to the peace talks in Geneva, he added.

He invoked the ongoing suffering of Syrians on the ground and said his group would not negotiate before the fall of the regime.

"The residents of Moadamiyet al-Sham are dying of hunger," he said, referring to a Damascus rebel suburb under regime fire where the Syrian Red Crescent evacuated 1,500 people on Sunday.

"Ghouta (outside Damascus) is under siege and it is forbidden to even bring in bread. Are these the conditions that will allow us to achieve... a democratic transition in Syria?" Sabra added.

The international community, led by Russia and the United States, has been pushing for the Syrian regime and rebels to attend a peace conference dubbed Geneva 2 to find a political solution to the conflict.

The proposed meeting has been delayed for months, but Washington and Moscow are now talking about a potential mid-November date for the conference.

The Syrian National Council, which is one of the most important members of the Syrian opposition, has long said it will not negotiate until President Bashar Assad's regime is toppled.

But Sabra's announcement, which comes after two days of meetings of the Council's top leadership, could deal a major blow to the planned talks.

It comes a day before U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry is due in London to meet Lakhdar Brahimi, the U.N.-Arab League envoy for Syria, to discuss preparations for the Geneva 2 meeting.

Last month, the Coalition's president Ahmed Jarba met with U.N. chief Ban Ki-Moon, who praised his "commitment to send a delegation to the Geneva Conference."

Ban also urged Jarba "to reach out to other opposition groups and agree on a representative and united delegation," U.N. spokesman Martin Nesirky said.

But the prospect of talks with Assad's regime continues to be deeply unpopular both among members of Jarba's Coalition and rebel fighters on the ground in Syria.

Sabra fiercely criticized the international community, accusing it of failing to punish the regime after an August 21 sarin attack that reportedly killed hundreds of people in the outskirts of the capital Damascus.

Washington threatened to carry out military strikes in response to the attacks, which the United States and the Syrian opposition blamed on the regime.

But military action was averted by a U.S.-Russian deal under which Syria is turning over its chemical arsenal for destruction.

"The international community has focused on the murder weapon, which is the chemical weapons, and left the murderer unpunished and forgotten the victims," Sabra said.

"The regional and international context does not give the impression that Geneva 2 will offer anything to the Syrians," he added.

"We will not participate in a conference that is intended to hide the failure of international politics."

This of course means even more misery for Lebanon. More refugees, more social and economic turmoil. The clock is ticking for Lebanon, it may be too late already.

The Lebanese government is held hostage by those who wish to cripple Lebanon and loot Lebanese public goods at pennies on the dollar. They are in command now ...

There will no money allocated to the Lebanese government for refugees ... with more refugees on the way.

There is already a stalemate driven by Saudi proxies to stop development of Lebanon's oil and gas.

The crippling of governance has almost halted foreign investment and tourism drying up foreign exchange money.

Just when diplomacy was getting started it is now once again being sabotaged by Saudi Arabia and their saboteurs in Lebanon ...

I hope they stand on their position, it hurts to say that looking at all the death and destruction, but we have to get rid of assad and co. for the sake of syria and lebanon... Talks with al baath yes (would be a permanant solution if a big part of syrian population is not involved) and baath as any other political party no more egemony...
But talk with assad never, make of him an exemple for all other dictators...

Oppressors and fascists operate by first attempting to ridicule any one that opposes their views and later attempt to dehumanize them by not engaging in meaningful discussions. Otherwise, they would be treating you with the respect that you deserve.

If you examine George Sabra closely, you can see him thinking "WHEN WILL I BECOME RELEVANT?"

tarata-ta-ta-ta General !

Did anyone attend the gathering at the french embassy today at noon? You know, we were commemorating the 23rd anniversary of cowardness and Treason of Michel Aoun. The day he decided to save his miserable skin instead of honouring and standing by his men. Many died because they believed in his BS. I'm not even going to mention the Lebanese who lost their lives as a result of his blind bombing of beirut.

Let President Suleiman grant him and nazisrallah the order of the Cedar for their bravery. they surely know how to hide!

this opposition is pathetic now they are taking this stance because they did not get what they want..they were banking on a feorign led strike because they are loosing on the ground and they didn't get it..in my opinion this is just talk, if they keep this up they will be seen as the stallers of progress not the creators of it and the people will start to turn on them

tony:no and they also use radios

if he wanted to change demographics, why would he fill lebanon with more sunnis than anything else? m14 love it and want more, mikatii leaves the borders open, fpm's advice of cross border camps is not endorsed, and ha is ok with this too because it makes m14 happy. but they're going back after the war whether they like it or not.

heya tiny brain, 3/4 of these groups are created by the assad clans, and paid by them. only the FSA is FREE.

keep encouraging ASSad, it will result in 3 million refugees occupying lebanon and slaughtering your families for any given reason one day or another because you're too silly to open your stinky eyes.

I'll be laughing my ASSAd off on that day.
