Report: Saudi Aid to Lebanese Army Will Take Effect within a Month

إقرأ هذا الخبر بالعربية W460

The high demand on some of the military equipment pledged by Saudi Arabia to the Lebanese army will result in a short delay in delivering them to the military institution, reported the pan-Arab daily al-Hayat on Sunday.

A French source told the daily however that the Saudi grant will take effect “within a month.”

In December, the kingdom pledged to grant 3 billion dollars in aid to the army.

A delay in the delivery of helicopters that are included in the deal is expected due to their unavailability because of the high demand on them.

The source stressed however the need to implement the deal as soon as possible.

It emphasized that Saudi Arabia and France seek to bolster the army “because they view it as a state institution that represents the whole of Lebanon and not just one political camp against the other.”

A French delegation is expected to head to Lebanon within weeks in order to tackle the upcoming presidential elections.

It will also most likely address the grant to the Lebanese army.

On December 27, President Michel Suleiman announced that Saudi Arabia has decided to donate three billion dollars with the aim of purchasing French weapons for the Lebanese army as soon as possible.

FT - m8 has been in government for almost 3 years and not a bullet from Iran. The army did not refuse a grant from Iran. When negotiations started on type of weapons, Iran was looking to sell and not grant. It is why not even an m8 government followed up on this.

Thumb lebanon_first 12 January 2014, 20:51

rafehh. jibto joura la FT. Indeed. Iran wanted to sell. Not grant.
Iran only grants to Hezb Iran to do policy of Iran. (like if iran gave a damn about the palestinian cause or about israel)

all we need is defensive weapons ie
anti aircraft missiles , anti war ship missiles , and anti tank missiles
lets see if our army gets these weapons , or old stock of Humvees

Thumb jabal10452 12 January 2014, 12:30

French weaponry is of higher quality than Iran weaponry. Our army deserves the best possible equipment. That's all I care about.

Nobody gives us help for free, whether it is Iran, KSA, France or the US. There is always a debt to be repaid down the road. The minute you accept aid, you are compromising the independence of you national decision making. That's the price we pay for being a poorly managed country. The responsibility for this sorry state of affairs is collective and not isolated to any political coalition.

Missing helicopter 12 January 2014, 19:32

jabal,
I personally do not believe there is any price to pay for this aid for the following reasons:
1) President Sleiman is a clean man and he would not have accepted this aid if there were strings or conditions attached.

2) I believe that KSA benefits from reigning in HA (as part of curbing Iran's influence). This intersects with the desire of the President and Most Lebanese to have the LAF be better armed than any militia as a first step to build the country. We can not build a nation controlled by sectarian militias or Palestinian arms.

Missing beirutbastard00 13 January 2014, 05:24

The weapons will hopefully give them enough power to go all the way in to da7yi and the camps.

Thumb cedre 12 January 2014, 12:49

They can send us a cheque anytime.
Russians proposed us outdated aircrafts that need dozens of $ millions to be refurbished and maintained. We need helicos and something like supertucanos.
Plus those MIGs dont come into our defence doctrine.
Iranian cant arm themselves, let alone help us...

Thumb proudm14. 12 January 2014, 16:56

Missing greatpierro 12 January 2014, 17:51

cedre that is exactly ture. The Russian offered helicopters for free but the maintenance contract was too expensive and the army refused it. As for the Iranians, they offered no arms but to sell arms.

Thumb cedre 12 January 2014, 12:53

could the geniuses like ft and southern, explain us why LAF should get iranian crappy weapons ? Do they ignore that 2006 'war' was mainly fought with RUSSIAN rpg29 and kornet atgw ?
Iran is begging Russia for modern weaponry, and we all saw in South Ossetia war how outdated russia military is...

Reportedly, the aid will consist of two squadrons, fully equipped, of the latest French fighter-bomber. The Saudi king already has sixteen such squadrons, no single aircraft of which has ever been flown in the skies above the kingdom. A spokesman for the security liaison team described the measure as "win-win". Asked who won under such a frivolous defence policy, the spokesperson replied, "Are you talking to me--are you talking to me?" and glared in the direction of the questioner, although it was hard to say what he was looking at because of his dark glasses.

Default-user-icon Illusionist (Guest) 12 January 2014, 15:52

@ all commentators, as usual, typical lebanese thinking, blablabla saudi arabia and iran blablabla. Let me tell you something you might not know or because as lebanese , we like to read the big title and start our illusions. Read details please. This help of 3 billion is on several years, if i remember well on 5 years which comes back to 600million $ a year. Just to inform you in a state that has been paralysed like ours for more than 8 years since 2005, not to mention before with the syrians but hey we could have put the blame on them back them :) now its different. Well 600 million in a year is nothing if you pay 80000 salaries, soldiers , generals, retirements ( as u know how they are high in leb), maintenance of tanks, humvees, artillery , training, clothes, ammunitions. so your 600 million a year is nothing maybe the extras would buy some light weapons, some trucks, and more clothes. its nothing but some tips for the army, not a takfiri-salafist evil plan.

Default-user-icon Illusionist (Guest) 12 January 2014, 15:56

Now if this help constituted 3 billion $ a year, for 5 years, which means 15 billion $, that would be alarming and would have meant something. We could have bought at least 10 F16 or 10 MIG-29, some choppers, 100 new tanks, artillery, etc...

Not defending Saudi Arabia, we all know the vicious stuff coming out of there, but this help is nothing more than a little push for Sleiman and the army to give him a bit of psychological support and maybe to tell him they are here to help him or Qahwaji if they decide a military takeover is the best option, since our lovely m14 and m8 as usual are not finding common grounds on their respective "commissions"

Nothing in the world could make me any happier, know today that the KSA is making good on this grant pledge, that it will be reality within a month. No matter what side we may belong to, today such a grant will finally make our LAF the strong institution that we've all been calling, and for decades now. Finally, once our army becomes a strong, authoritative and assertive army, then believe me all of you, we will be on our way to becoming at loooooooooooooong last, the Lebanon we all want to see, to live in, to serve, to enjoy, prosper ad above all, to be able to tell our children and their children, that they can stay here, work, live and prosper inside their own land. I am one who today says, a big Shukran to the KSA and to those who made it a reality, and I'm thankful that nations are beginning to know our truth, finally.

Missing watan-libnan 12 January 2014, 17:26

Thumb -phoenix1 12 January 2014, 17:38

Fact, do take into consideration that our LAF, plus our air force have been able to repair and keep in working condition equipment that has been around since the last century. What I know is that weapons are purchased with servicing in mind, so in truth there should be no major concerns here.

Thumb -phoenix1 12 January 2014, 21:23

@thefact we are Lebanese after all, don't write us down, we are savvy, creative and have so many ways to meet head on all challenges. Take for example the MEA service center at BIA, it is one of the best, run entirely by Lebanese techinicians. We Lebanese are also at the forefront of development and some of the biggest projects in the world, to be honest with you, I see nowhere where our our army or LAF cannot service any equipment it receives, not or in the future, but I'll also be as frank, that our worst enemy is the divisions that people are trying to bring between us Lebanese, so as I see it? technical issues are no issues to us, that is a foregone conclusion, but the divisions are.

A forum open to all points of views means a lot to me and I am convinced that good will eventually come out of it. Getting opponents of M14 banned from this forum will turn it into an echo chamber, and will widen the divide between us Lebanese.
I read FT's comments on Bkirki article, and of course it is out of line.
FT, M14 are not pigs. They love their country as much as you do but they have a different opinion than yours about what kind of country Lebanon should be. Please attack the ideas, not the person(s) behind it.
Look people, I'm not the person to moralize here. I also reverted to insults at times when some article or comment struck a raw nerve.

It could be to help keep the Syrians out, seeing that they are losing in their plans there. Bolstering our army could be used to help tackle the jihadist spillover from Syria who are funded by Saudi. It could be to protect all their investments in Lebanon, banks and property included.

Either way, it's not to create an armed militia stronger than the army. On the contrary, it was donated to the army.

Btw, some here are making fun of us for accepting the donation... I just have a question, when you are donating to someone do you look down on him for having no pride?
