European ambassadors to Lebanon stressed on Wednesday on the European Union's “continuous” support to the Lebanese state following the cabinet's formation, considering that the new government would enable the country to deal with challenges it is currently facing.

“The announcement of the government is a key step in Lebanon’s efforts to tackle effectively the extraordinary security, economic and political challenges the country is facing, in particular the unprecedented refugee influx,” EU Ambassador to Lebanon Angelina Eichhorst said after heading a delegation of European ambassadors who met with Prime Minister Tammam Salam at the Grand Serail.

Eichhorst continued: “EU's ambassadors look forward to a continued strong engagement with the government of Lebanon and assured the premier of the EU's steadfast support to the country in meeting the pressing challenges.”

She added: “The ambassadors underlined the need to address security and stability, to ensure the effective functioning of State institutions, to hold elections in line with the constitution and international standards, to enhance economic and social development, and to address the consequences of the Syrian crisis including the management of the refugees.”

The delegation also expressed EU's willingness to further assist with the implementation of the EU-Lebanon Action Plan.

In a separate matter, the ambassadors strongly condemned Wednesday's bomb attacks in the southern suburbs of Beirut, calling for the perpetrators of these “heinous” acts to be brought to justice.

I would rather see the EU willingness to further assist arming the LAF with meaningful weapons. Less words and more deeds of support please.
