20 ISF Members Forced to Defect 'over Army, Hizbullah Practices in Arsal, Syria'

A number of Internal Security Forces were forced to defect by al-Nusra Front members on Sunday after being taken captive by the group, said LBCI television.

Twenty security forces members were shown announcing their defection “from the army and Hizbullah” in a video uploaded to Youtube.

The members announced that they were defecting in protest against the army's “targeting of civilians in the eastern Bekaa region of Arsal.”

They also declared their condemnation of Hizbullah's “terrorist actions” in Syria.

The ISF members were made to present themselves to the camera and later condemn the army and Hizbullah's practices.

At the end of the video, a captor was seen presenting the defected members with candy.

Clashes erupted on Saturday between the army and al-Nusra Front in Arsal following the arrest of a prominent member of the armed group.

Eight soldiers were killed in the unrest and a number of others were wounded.

The security forces members shown in the video were taken captive during the fighting.

These security forces were kidnapped yesterday. They haven't defected. See the images in the article earlier "Soldiers, Civilians Killed as Army Arrest of Top Nusra Member Ignites Clashes in Arsal". They are clearly the isf in the back of the pick up being held at gun point.

Just hope for their safe release or rescue!

I did read it yesterday, and just checked to see if I was hallucinating, but nope, here is what it says:
"Al-Mayadeen television later said that the the Lebanese army managed to release the two abducted members, who were handed over to the military institution according to radio Voice of Lebanon (100.5).
Quoting military sources, LBCI said the release of the two soldiers took place in Wadi Hmayyed and added that four troops were wounded in the operation."
And those were just two, not twenty as here.

Did neither of you read the part about where it says they were captives who were forced to defect? It's in the first line of the piece. But I guess actually reading is too difficult for you.

That first paragraph was edited in after I had posted my first comment. In this case I'm just sad and hoping for the soldiers' safe release.

do you think that they had a choice in their announcement being kidnapped and threatened?

Missing greatpierro 03 August 2014, 10:25

for the second time I agree with you FT. In the news this morning, it is said that Hizbollah are fighting along with the army against the terrorist. This is exactly what should happen. Hizbollah joining the army in defending our country. A step further would be the integration of hizbollah in the army to make it stronger with one command.

Why is this article misleading? They are kidnapped (captives) and are forced to appear in front of a camera.
Such practices by Naharnet or any other media MUST be subject to punishment by law.

greatpiero, your comment would make "some" sense if HA was not already fighting in Syria. Moreover, defending Lebanon is the sole and exclusive responsibility of the LAF and not a joint responsibility with a sectarian criminal militia who killed lebanese and assassinated their leaders.

Missing imperatrice 03 August 2014, 11:34

Oh now they want to defend teh country hand in hand with teh army, but where was this cooperation and collaboration spirit when they want alone to war
Plus ask shiite residents in beqaa, and they' ll tell u how hezb el shaytan guys are trying to protect shiite villages instead of fighting alongside the border

They can't defect from what they don't belong to ! They are not army nor HA... What a joke! Yalla, i am defecting from the German special forces...

Thumb jabal10452 03 August 2014, 12:31

Here's my reading: They were kidnapped and forced to make that statement. The alternative is decapitition.

Thumb Bandoul 03 August 2014, 13:55

@ashrafieh, any person(s) who use outdated verses in the Qur'an or any holy book as a pretext and justification to kill innocent and defenseless human beings are terrorist savages who themselves shouldn't be allowed to roam the earth. I condemn all forms of fanatical killing, bet it at the hands of Sunni or Shia extremist! They are sides of the same coin. These people do not represent God or any holy book, they are the disciples of the devil.
