Amnesty Condemns Iran's 'Brutal' Blinding of Man
International rights group Amnesty International condemned Iranian authorities Friday for what it said was the "unspeakably cruel" blinding of a man on the grounds of retribution.
The man was forcibly blinded in his left eye Tuesday under the principle of "qisas" -- an eye for an eye -- at a prison in Karaj, west of Tehran, Amnesty said.
The man had been convicted of throwing acid in another man's face in 2009, leading to a 10-year prison sentence, an order to pay blood money to the victim and the act of retribution.
"Punishing someone by deliberately blinding them is an unspeakably cruel and shocking act," said Raha Bahreini, Amnesty's Iran researcher, in a statement.
"This punishment exposes the utter barbarity of Iran's justice system and underlines the Iranian authorities' shocking disregard for basic humanity."
Iran's Tasnim news agency previously reported that the long-postponed punishment had finally gone ahead, but there has been no official comment.
The punishment of another male convict, who was scheduled to be blinded and made deaf in a similar act of retribution on Tuesday has been postponed until next month, Amnesty said.
I understand you empathize with the blinded man, you fit right into his profile:
throw acid on another man's face, and then cry when the same is done to you.
As for amnesty, i find it weird that they react to harshly to this eye-for-eye, while their reactions to floggings, limp amputations, and beheadings in saudi (for "crimes" as ridiculous as creating a free-expression blog, stealing a piece of bread, or "being a which") as so discreet...
Mowaten - another silly statement. Please check amnesty international web site for condemnation of Saudi transgressions as well. Ironically, Saudi Arabia and Iran are different sides of the same coin.
I've seen amnesty's condemnations, or rather soft-worded "disapprovals" of saudi's insane and disproportionate punishments rafehh, they are far from the hyperbolic wording here:
"unspeakably cruel and shocking act"
"utter barbarity of Iran's justice system"
"Iranian authorities' shocking disregard for basic humanity"
all this for a punishment that seems fair, the guy is not accused of not bowing low enough to the king or of having practiced "witchcraft", he THREW ACID IN ANOTHER MAN'S FACE. If someone threw acid in my face and made me lose an eye i'd have both his eyes and all his teeth out.
Coolmec i know u are a rational person, please dont act as those blind march 8 guys that want us to believe that saudia is satan and iran is our savior...
Both, regimes are sectarian, both deserve a radical change.. No to any of them, we donnot want to be dragged in a war ragging for centuries between ali, hussein, omar..or any of them, we want democracy, secular civil state, gender equality...u know a normal country..
Those are amnesty repports on saudia so i see that they donnot spare them to....

Btw nice to see u back
This man was a hardcore criminal. What do you think the U.S does to their prisoners in Guantanamo and inside their states? In Saudi Arabia they whip women for driving cars. You guys are laughable. Amnesty is an American tool never used against themselves or their allies.
but the funny thing is how you miss tic and mooowaten drive crazy, running to the defense of iran....
it sure must bother you to see that iran are as barbarians as saudis despite all you do to pretend the contrary!! LOL
you are sooooo laughable in the defense of the ISLAMIC republic!
