Gemayel Meets al-Arabi, Says Clashes with Copts Affect Christians in the Arab World

Phalange Party leader Amin Gemayel said on Saturday that the clashes that erupted at Cairo between Egyptian troops and the Copts ascend fears over the Christians’ conditions in the Arab World.

Gemayel discussed the latest developments with Arab League chief Nabil al-Arabi in Egypt, according to a statement issued by the Phalange Party press office.

“What happened to the Christian Copts in Egypt forces us to think of solutions…We count on Egypt, along with the Arab League, to guide everyone toward stability, democracy, freedom and pluralism,” he said.

Asked about the effect that the developments in Syria will have on Lebanon, Gemayel considered that “all the Arab countries are affected by the developments, and it’s our duty to seek solutions through dialogue.”

On his part, al-Arabi said that the two parts exchanged opinions “on different issues in the Arab world.”

25 people, mainly Coptic Christian demonstrators, were killed in clashes with the Egyptian army in Cairo on Sunday.

Copts were protesting against a recent attack in which a recently renovated village church was attacked in the southern province of Aswan.
