Dutch police have arrested a worker at the British embassy in The Hague on suspicion of arson after a fire tore through the mission early Tuesday, police said.

A 32-year-old Dutch employee at the embassy has been arrested and will remain in detention until being brought before a judge on Friday, a statement said.

"Police believe there may have been arson," it added.

No one was injured when the fire broke out at the building in a central upmarket neighborhood of The Hague at around 0500 GMT.

An embassy spokesman declined to comment on the arrest because of the ongoing police investigation, saying damage to the building would be assessed on Wednesday.

Embassy workers have been moved to the ambassador's residence, the embassy tweeted.

The building suffered damage from smoke, fire and water, police said.
