Kerry, Lavrov Pay Joint Nice Tribute at French Embassy in Moscow

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry and his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov on Friday offered their condolences at the French embassy in Moscow over the Nice truck attack that left at least 84 people dead.

Kerry and Lavrov laid flowers in front of the embassy building and wrote messages in a book of condolences.

Earlier Friday, the top diplomats held a minute's silence for the victims ahead of talks on the Syria crisis.

Kerry and Lavrov arrived at the embassy in the same car in a joint motorcade after more than four hour of talks on ways to revive the stalled Syrian peace process that began just hours after the Nice attack.

"Russia is in solidarity with the French people," Lavrov wrote in the book of condolences.

"The best response to the abhorrent terrorist act in Nice will be our shared determination not to give into terrorists, wherever they may be trying to perpetrate their filthy and vile acts."

Kerry meanwhile offered the United States' "deepest condolences" to the people of France.

"May we all show the strength and purpose to end this scourge of terror," Kerry wrote.

Muscovites have been laying flowers in front of the embassy and offering their condolences over the attack throughout the day.

One Russian citizen, student Viktoria Savchenko, died in the attack, her Moscow university said.
