Govt. Adoption of Qaida Claims May Help Syrian Regime against Int’l Community

The Lebanese government’s position from Defense Minister Fayez Ghosn’s statements that al-Qaida terrorist group had infiltrated the country may impact the Syrian regime’s position on its crisis should the issue become internationalized, reported the pan-Arab daily al-Hayat on Saturday.

Sources monitoring the crisis in Syria explained: “Should the Lebanese government adopt Ghosn’s claims, the Syrian regime would be able to portray its crisis before the international community as a dispute between terrorism and its desire to implement reform.”

It would also be able to accuse Syrian opposition members residing outside the country of providing cover for sides that are seeking to create instability in Syria, they added.

They noted however that the Lebanese government has not yet decided to adopt the defense minister’s statements, seeing as it has held two sessions since his remarks without issuing a position on them, despite pressure on it to take a stand on the issue.

The sources wondered whether the adoption of Ghosn’s remarks would drive Lebanon towards a crisis, adding that he has not yet revealed to the government the information on al-Qaida that he had allegedly obtained.

The minister had said a few weeks ago that members of the terrorist group had infiltrated the Bekaa town of Arsal.

His remarks came shortly before twin explosions in the Syrian capital Damascus that left over 40 dead.

The regime accused al-Qaida of being behind the attack.

The March 14-led opposition has slammed Ghosn’s Qaida claims, saying that they may be an attempt to link Lebanon to the Syrian crisis.

of course , these statements were only made for this purpose...our gvt is doing what they can to help bashar from falling fearing for their privileges and dollars coming from syria as the defected high ranking official claimed in cairo. he also claimed that hezb and amal were helping the syrian army in the repression of the demonstrators... and god knows what else M8 is doing to back their master!

have you heard about the testimony of the wife of a former hezbi cheikh who wanted to reform the party and wanted it to come back to a lebanese chiism like before and no more iranian. he was accused of treason and being an israeli spy... he was sent to syria and never heard of so far...this is what happens to those of the hezb who want to change the party and bring reforms to it: they are accused of treason or even kidnapped to be shut up...
if you want to stop pledging allegiance to iran you are threatened!
so how can lebanese chia be against the hezb? they cannot or have to shut up! or else they face big problems!

democracy the hezbi way...

Why not do as Dr. Mufehmanchi Mokhowerem Geagea did when "his friends" of Al Qaida invaded Achrafieh and destroyed private, public and church properties? He called them "minnina" and gave them his blessing, this protector of the "institutions" and the quasi-man with a shameful track record of protecting the Christian!!! MINNINA, huh!

Rocket science...
If Al Qaeda exists in Lebanon, why don't they simply catch them and lock them up... Obviously some people know where they are and what they are up to!

Come on people, it's not new. All Lebanese know that Lebanon has huge al-Qaeda sympathizers, if not al-Qaeda members. Just a few months ago during an anti-Syria demonstration in Tripoli, certain Lebanese people were holding up pictures of Osama bin Laden. The picture even appeared on naharnet, so I'm sure most of you saw it.

If you feel that helps the Syrian government's position, then what you're saying is simply that the truth helps the Syrian government's position.

Missing youssefhaddad 07 January 2012, 18:29

The international community knows that the Lebanese government is currently under the full control of the Syrian and Iranin regimes. This is why whatever the government states is irrelevant to the rest of the world!
Al Qaeda and other extremists could not parachute into Lebanon , either they come from the Syrian borders or through the airport which is totally controlled by hezbollah.

Thumb Abubakr 07 January 2012, 19:37

They said they will turn the region to afghanistan, and they are doing so, its the provocation of hezb and bashar thats creating groups that sympathizes with al Qaeda, they want it out of control, they will get it, but its gna back fire, like it did with americans, hezn and bashar are now using the same propaganda
