Assad Cheered by Thousands, Vows to Defeat 'Conspiracy'

President Bashar Assad made a rare public appearance on Wednesday, vowing to defeat a "conspiracy" against Syria a day after he blamed foreign interests for stoking months of deadly violence.

"Without a doubt we will defeat the conspiracy, which is nearing its end and will also be the end for (the conspirators) and their plans," Assad told tens of thousands of cheering supporters in the capital's central Omayyad Square.

Casually dressed in a jacket and open-necked shirt, a confident-looking Assad stood at the edge of the throng, security guards in front of him, and said: "I came here to draw from your strength. Thanks to you, I have never felt weak.

"Whoever wants to talk should come down into the street," said Assad, as he thanked his backers, many of whom were holding up his portrait or waving Syrian flags, for "supporting the institutions of the state and the army."

The United Nations estimated last month that more than 5,000 people had been killed in the crackdown on anti-regime protests that erupted in March, and many of them have been gunned down during peaceful street protests.

Damascus accuses "armed terrorist gangs" of fomenting the bloodshed.

In a speech on Tuesday, his first public appearance in months, Assad vowed to crush "terrorism" with an iron fist.

"Regional and international parties who are trying to destabilize Syria can no longer falsify the facts and events," the embattled leader said in the nearly two-hour speech.

That prompted opposition movements to accuse him of pushing the country toward civil war and world powers to accuse him of trying to shift the blame for the 10 months of bloodletting in the protests against his regime.

The murderer's appearance reminds me of Qaddafi's last one from atop of a building. A sign of weakness no doubt..... his demise is inevitable!

This regime like all the fallen regimes follows the policy of "Lie,lie lie and someone might believe you". I am just wondering if this guy is the only one who believes his own lies.

Let him give the same speech in Homs, Deraa, or Hamaa. Look at the men on the stage with him. They are 100% mukhabbarat. No doubt the people on the street are too.

He is desperate. His world is collapsing.

He must be getting despirate to show up in public with this inane comment. Unless he is in negotiation with the opposition, which he is not, then this guy is saying that by one more month the protests will be over, which means that he is saying he will have liquidated all voices of opposition against his regime within the next 6 weeks. He is out of his mind.

And about that conspiracy that you can read about at Global Research Institute and its web site, the only powers keeping Assad in power are the US and Israel. They hold back the West from deposing this guy because he is key to Israeli security along its northern border. Rami Macklouf has admitted as much. And Hezbollah supports the regime that protects Israeli security. Have you not all connected the dots yet?

galiboun just like you take your orders from Iran/Syria,but the difference is whether you want to admit it or not Iran/Syria are on there own and even Russia will have to lean towards the US/Euro when it comes down to it.As for Church bombings and killing people outside churchs while they pray i only have to look at the Syrians/PLO and all the other grubby syrian allies that killed lebanese civilians during the war.But there is a GOD and what goes around comes around your beloved Syria and everyone else who had a hand in Killing/Raping/Kidnapping will have there time 1000 times over.Thank you

Long Live The Syrian Civil War!

Ghaliboun what March 14 will do is get the government back. This time there won't be any so called national unity government. The government will be 100% March 14, and March 8 leaders which u love licking their asses everyday will no longer have a job. Especially that good for nothing Aoun. In any case he is an old fart bound to die soon from his old age and craziness.
