Speaker Nabih Berri urged Energy Minister Jebran Bassil to come up with a clear plan to resolve the electricity crisis, saying parliament has done its part in endorsing a draft law.

Several newspapers on Monday quoted Berri as telling his visitors that he rejected claims by Bassil about deterioration in the electricity situation in the future.

“Out of our friendship and ties with his political team, I ask him to be honest with the Lebanese about what’s happening,” the speaker said about the energy minister, who is a member of the Free Patriotic Movement.

Bassil has warned that power rationing will be much worse in the future, blaming several parties of putting sticks in the wheels of his plans.

The minister should come up with a plan and propose solutions to resolve the crisis, Berri said, adding the parliament played its role when it endorsed the $1.2 billion electricity plan in September.

He also stressed that Bassil should reveal the identity of those he claims are hindering the implementation of his plans whether they are members of the cabinet or parliament.

Hizbullah, which is an FPM ally, has also joined Berri in holding the energy minister responsible for the severe electricity rationing.

Hizbullah MP Hassan Fadlallah called on Sunday for a fair rationing and held the government responsible for the power crisis.

The cabinet is expected to discuss on Monday the electricity crisis during a session scheduled to be held at Baabda palace.

He's been the energy minister for over three years and things have been getting much worse, much much worse--this isn't an FPM issue, he is simply incompetent. If he were't the SIL, he wouldn't be in this position--he wouldn't have a job at all.

The MoT Sehnaoui has actually done something tangible--Bassil OTOH, talks too much, blames too many others, and doesn't do anything himself.

Energy Minister Jebran Bassil condemned on Monday the shutdown of the Zahrani power plant, describing it as an attack against state institutions.
He said during a press conference: “We will not remain silent over the incident.” (December 5th 2011)

The Zahrani district is considered a sphere of influence for Berri and the Amal Movement.

Listen to the sound of silence...
