Lebanon Approves Crisis Funding to Avert Power Blackout
Lebanon's parliament approved $200 million in emergency funding Monday to stave off a national power cut the energy minister warned would otherwise hit by the end of March.
Caretaker energy minister Raymond Ghajar said three weeks ago that the country would plunge into "total darkness" if no money was secured to buy fuel for power stations.
The state-run Electricity of Lebanon (EDL) faces dire cash shortages, as the country grapples with its worst economic crisis since the 1975-1990 civil war.
On Monday, "parliament approved... a $200 million advance" for EDL, the National News Agency reported.
The decision came a day after one of the country's largest power plants, Zahrani in south Lebanon, stopped operating because it ran out of fuel.
EDL said the closure was caused because a fuel ship could not be immediately offloaded because of logistical problems.
Meanwhile, another cargo ship scheduled to arrive from Kuwait has been held up due to the stuck container ship blocking the Suez Canal, it added.
Power cuts have been common in Lebanon for decades, forcing Lebanese use private generators.
Now the country is facing an economic crunch and fast running out of hard currency to back imports.
The EDL power company had been running on a loan allocated under the 2020 budget, but the 2021 budget has not yet been passed, with the country also struggling in a political crisis.
Every cent spent on fossil power is stealing from Lebanese and destroying their health. Not to mention corrupt politicians notably FPM and Bassil. Renewable have become cheaper than fossil based plants. Wind turbines cost has drastically decreased in past five years. Offshore wind is the most cost efficient. What about using one of Tripoli island for offshore wind at a fraction of the cost of power plant. The port needed for service can be also used for tourism (mini Sharm el sheik). Further, a new docking port for large cruise ships bringing each thousands of tourists. Tripoli is perfectly located for cruise itinerary between Greece, Turkey, Israel and Egypt. An island docking is more secured for cruise ships until Lebanon is out of crisis. Part of the island can be developed by cruises. Anyway the main point is offshore wind turbine on Tripoli Island is by far the cheapest energy for Lebanon.
The $200 millions they just allocated is taken from our bank savings. Wake up people, they are robbing us!
Yeah people haven’t gotten it yet that the “funds” are actually their lollars. No one is loaning the Lebanese government but local banks from deposits. $200m for a power sector that is one of the worst in the world. Kinda makes you wonder why no political clown or hack actually calls out the real reason beyond this comically corrupt sector.
Unbelievable, as they always find ways to plunder the country further. Lebanon at peak capacity couldn't provide the essential service. This is a tragedy nothing else!
