Geagea Won’t Hesitate to Run for Presidency: Serious Govt. Work Substitute for Dialogue

Lebanese Forces leader Samir Geagea renewed his rejection of the national dialogue sessions, saying that he is seeking serious talks, while the current discussions are bound to fail, reported As Safir newspaper on Saturday.

He told the newspaper: “Serious and immediate government action is the substitute for the dialogue.”

“We would be the first to support the government should it agree to revitalize its work,” he remarked.

He explained that Syria and Hizbullah are the main participants at the all-party talks “and they are not serious in reaching any agreement.”

“They simply agreed to resume the talks because of the poor situation on the ground,” said Geagea.

“Our current problems require government decisions and not futile discussions,” he continued.

The government needs to address the issues of the state budget, administrative appointments, the unrest in Tripoli, demarcation of the border, and resolve economic and energy issues, stated the LF chief.

“These matters have nothing to do with the dialogue,” he stressed.

“Hizbullah’s arms are the only thing that can be tackled at the talks,” he noted.

“Dialogue cannot replace constitutional institutions,” remarked Geagea.

He added however that he does not oppose holding dialogue away from the media spotlight that would include the Lebanese Forces, Hizbullah, Free Patriotic Movement leader MP Michel Aoun, the Mustaqbal Movement, and the Progressive Socialist Party.

These talks could replace the current dialogue that includes no less than 20 leaders, who are tackling an agenda that was placed seven years ago, he said.

“There are much more pressing issues that need to be tackled than Hizbullah’s weapons. No one can lead me to believe that this issue can be resolved at the time being,” he declared.

“The party is not ready to discuss its arms,” he noted.

The national dialogue resumed on June 11 after a 19-month absence.

Geagea boycotted the talks, deeming them a “distraction.”

The all-party talks are set to resume on Monday.

On the 2014 presidential election, Geagea said: “I do not plan on running for the elections, but I wouldn’t hesitate if I was asked and if the circumstances were appropriate.”

Addressing the Syrian crisis, the LF chief said that the toppling of its regime will positively affect Lebanon.

“The demise of the regime is out of the question,” he added.

“The sooner its collapses the better for Lebanon and Syria,” he continued.

I absolutely share your opinion phoenix !! Samir should not run for the presidential elections only for one reason he couldn't unite all the Lebanese there are to many Parties who would oppose him. The same counts for Aoun running as a presidential candiate. We would need an unifying president like Qahwaji for example !! It must be a neutral person where all parties can agree up on !!!

Although it is common sense, geagea would not be able to gather all the parties around him, think of this: aoun will probably have a stroke and we will have our tuesdays back for one.

as for kahwagi, i dont have anything against the guy but no. he would be as useless and spineless as sleiman. we shouldnt rejoice at having the army general always take the position. we want to build a country not install a tradition of military sort of nepotism. we need someone qualified, and why not have him from one side or the other. that is what democracy is about. having to reach a consensual agreement every time isnt. choosing the guy who will be the least hassle is more like giving up and giving the lebanese people a bone to chew on while they run around fucking things up even more.

rant over

I wouldnt say sublime man is spineless and useless. The role of the president in lebanon is not executive as much it is symbolic. He had no legal powers to make things happen and that's why he is playing an amazing role of trying to unite positions and firefight crisis. This why the next president should always be as neutral as possible to maintain this positive role in the nasty Lebanese world of politics and let the democratic process be fully implemented in parlemantary elections and in the formation of the government.

if people have enough from war lords beeing politicians they have enough and it is unconstitutional for army generals beeing presidents
walaou we do not have in our civil society a person to be a great president , just let the people vote for our president as long as our parliament is remotly guided by different outside powers
nisbieh is a big push ahead

I slightly disagree with you Marouni. We have been accustomed to the idea of having a neutral president, but why should we? I think à président should be elected by a majority (whether it's Geagea or Aoun or any other person) and he should unite the people with his actions, and if he fails to do so, another one will be elected after his mandate. That is how democracy works all over the world. They tried to instore the same "demoukratiyé tawafoukiyyé" idea in the system but I see it as a major blow to democray. To me it is simple, no one stays in power eternally, so if a party or an alliance doesn't serve the country as well as it should, the citizens will replace it with another. This will give parties an incentive to meet popular demands and allow us to advance as a country...
(Of course, all that provided we have a good electoral law and more optimal presidential privileges. But still...)

Dr. Clueless Uneducated will do a great job at expediting the demise of the country and hand it to his crazy Brothers who will beatify him shortly afterwards.

You should read the whole interview, the question on presidency came last inthe interview and is the most uninteresting part. Hakim is not interested in the presidency, but he addressed the question properly.

You are a criminal who has only one ambition and that is to wipe out any leader of the Maronites. You are mentally unfit as confirmed "many many" years ago. You have no respect from the the majority of Christians and majority of Lebanese world-wide. Youa re seen as a tool by the Hariri-Sunni coalition of thieves and salafist-wahabi terrorists who terrorize the lebanese and murder Lebanese Army soldiers.

Decent people, run for your lives if Dr. Disasters runs for the presidency. It's better to be safe then dead.
