Lebanon Deports Syrians, Drawing Human Rights Watch Criticism

Lebanon deported 14 Syrians on Wednesday despite the raging violence over the border, drawing criticism from human rights activists.

The Lebanese authorities said the reasons for the expulsions were not political but a Human Rights Watch representative in Beirut said some of the deportees had expressed fears of persecution on their return.

"Fourteen men were deported to Syria today, despite the fact that four of them had asked not to be deported for fear of persecution if handed over to the Syrian authorities," the HRW representative told Agence France Presse.

One of them might be a political activist, the representative said, noting that the detainee had contacted HRW prior to being handed over to Syrian authorities at the border and expressed fear about what might happen to him.

The General Security said in a communique that those deported were wanted for common law not political offences.

"These people were handed over to the Syrian authorities because they had problems with the judiciary and had committed crimes, and as far as we know they were not political activists," an official stressed.

"If they were, we would not have deported them."

HRW said those who had requested not to be deported should have been given leave to stay -- regardless of whether they were politically active or not.

"We think that if someone has indicated a fear of persecution, they should not be deported," a HRW researcher said.

Human rights watchdogs accuse the Syrian authorities of resorting to torture and other ill-treatment against detainees.

In July, HRW charged that Syria was holding tens of thousands of detainees in a "torture archipelago" in which they were subjected to beatings, electric shocks and other abuse.

is this what our armed forces are supposed to do? is this the naki policy about?
then no to this type of armed forces governed by hatred and following foreign syrian regime orders.
hizbushaitan and fpm are undermining the armed forces pushing them to collapse and divide, so they can justify the next round of civil war as they know they will totally loose the upcoming elections.
they prefer to destroy the country but not loose power.

I have to agree with you. How come Lebanon is so bent on granting the Syrian regime's wishes, while Lebanese citizens are still being held in Syrian jails for unknown reasons, and there is no mention of them.

How come?.... glad you asked! Coz your government is surrogate to the Syrian regime and they owe their jobs, wealth, and influence to Assad regime! Plain and simple....

You are too quick to judge. They said these syrians were culprits of common law and had committed crimes in lebanon. Maybe that is true. In this case, good riddance.

Let's not be naive.... The Syrians can say anything to get these people back and torture them..... How easy is it to be accused of something you have not done in Syria or in Lebanon? .... VERY EASY!

Thumb makhaleh 02 August 2012, 13:18

I agree but at least wait till all this fighting is over hold them in custody then when the time comes hand them over

No well functioning democracy sends any people back to a country that's going through war. There is of course no excuse for such actions. If they have criminal records they are to be put in jail and go through a trial. The current government in Lebanon is surely the Syrian dictator's puppets.

I just thought of something....this means we should be able to deport HA back to iran
