Syrian Vice President Farouq al-Sharaa made his first public appearance in over a month on Sunday, following rumors that he had tried to defect and was under house arrest.

Sharaa, who met the head of the Iranian parliament's foreign policy committee, Aladin Borujerdi, was last seen in public at a state funeral for top security officials who were killed in a Damascus bomb blast on July 18.

Speculation has swirled since last week over the fate of Sharaa, the most powerful Sunni Muslim figure in President Bashar Assad's minority Alawite-led regime, since the opposition claimed he had tried to defect.

Assad's regime has been rattled by several high-profile defections as the Syrian conflict has escalated, including former prime minister Riad Hijab and prominent General Manaf Tlass, one of Assad's childhood friends.

The July 18 bomb attack claimed by the Free Syrian Army also dealt him a major blow, killing four top security officials including defense minister Daoud Rajha and his deputy Assef Shawkat, Assad's brother-in-law.

After the opposition claims that the 73-year-old Sharaa had defected, state television on August 19 quoted a statement from his office saying: "Mr. Sharaa has never thought about leaving the country or going anywhere."

A former deputy oil minister who defected in March this year also said earlier this month that it was "well-known" that Sharaa had tried to leave the country and was under house arrest.

Pictures taken by an Agence France Presse photographer show Sharaa, dressed in a dark blue business suit and wearing glasses, holding talks with Borujerdi at his office in Damascus.

Borujerdi, whose government is Damasus' staunchest ally, was quoted by the state news agency IRNA as saying Sunday: "We see Syria's security as our security. On this basis, we will stick by our Syrian brothers."

Syrian Foreign Minister Walid Muallem also said the government would only look at negotiating with the opposition after "purging Syria of armed groups," IRNA reported.

Borujerdi also met Assad, Syria's state news agency SANA said,

SANA had said on Saturday that a fake email had been sent out in its name claiming that Sharaa had been sacked, adding that the "information is completely wrong."

It was also forced to deny that Muallem had announced on Twitter he had replaced Sharaa, saying the information was "wrong" and that the foreign minister did not have a Twitter account.

Sharaa, along with several other top regime figures, was slapped with sanctions by the United States and the European Union in May last year just two months after the start of the uprising against Assad's autocratic rule.

Sharaa, 73, has served in senior posts for almost 30 years under both Assad and his father and predecessor Hafez Assad, becoming vice president in 2006 after serving as foreign minister since 1984.

Hijab, the highest profile government figure to defect, said on August 15 after fleeing to Jordan that regime only controlled 30 percent of Syria's territory and had "collapsed militarily, economically and morally."

Please do not leave, ya Farouk...stay until the bitter end and get the justice coming your way, for what you did to Lebanon, all those years. Kharma, and Payback, habeebi....please stay, until they get to you....

The biggest crime happened prior to that when they forced the Cairo agreement on Lebanon in 1973 and then again by sending their commandos in 1975 to crush the patriotic (pro-army) Lebanese and save the likes of you bigjohn.

@bigjohn: did you ever really believe that the Syrian, or any other Arab or Iranian regime, gives a damn about destroying Israel and liberating Palestine? If you did, then you are amongst the many Arabs that are constantly duped by dictators like Assad and HA's Nasrallah and Iran's Khameiny etc.
Wake up and see things the way they really are, the educated Arab youth have begun to awaken don't be left behind. All you need to do is start opening your eyes to really see...

He's worth more to the regime alive, than dead, in Syria than out. So they have the guy and parade him out when it is deemed necessary and good for the survival of the regime.

To say that this equates with Sharaa remaining in Syria of his own volition and free will is a mockery of the concept of free will and a violation of Mr. Sharaa's human rights.

They did that but from Lebanon (why destroy their economy when they can depend on you and others like you who do not care much about Lebanon's prosperity).

Ya big john I dont know how old you are,but in 1976 lebanon agreed to arab peacekeeping force to enter lebanon, then later assad took the opportunity to bring more troops and occupy our country.I feel sorry that people like you support foreigners against their own people.I would never support a foreigner against hizb eventhough I want them to disarm.

Sharaa was obliged to stay in Syria, return to Damascus and be obedient as his relatives are under arrest.
Usual practice in this part of the Arab world!

Much obliged! Can you relay your opinion to the rebels who confirmed Sharaa was in a safe place? Perhaps they have a body double and we do not want them to continue to be fooled by such a clever regime. Don't you agree, my child?

This is a wax figure of Farouq al-Sharaa, so say the hopeless hopeful foreigners of the Syrian revolution.

It is a matter of time before Sharaa's turn is here.

Lebanon is not Syria. The people are different, although they have mixed in with each other over thousands of years... Let's remove the geographic borders of Israel and Lebanon and Syria and what do we have?? The same people, just slightly different customs. Forget religion for a second and look at the humanity. Why hate Jews? Why hate Christians? Why hate Muslims? ... The real enemy is hate itself.
