Syria Demands Turkey Return Grounded Plane Cargo

Damascus accused Ankara on Thursday of "hostile" behavior after a Syrian Air plane was intercepted by Turkish authorities en route from Moscow to Damascus and forced to land in Ankara.

The interception of the plane on Wednesday was "hostile and reprehensible behavior" and was "another sign of the hostile policies of the Erdogan government, which harbors (rebels) and bombs Syrian territory," the foreign ministry said, referring to Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

The ministry demanded that Turkey return the cargo seized by Turkish authorities from the Syrian Air Airbus A-320 before it was allowed to take off again.

"The Syrian government calls on the Turkish authorities for a complete and proper restitution of the contents of the plane," it said.

Turkey scrambled two jets to force down the plane after reportedly receiving intelligence it was carrying military cargo for the regime of Syrian President Bashar Assad.

"Turkish military aircraft ... forced the plane to land without giving prior warning to the pilot. The military aircraft were so close that there could have been an accident," said Syrian Air director Aida Abdel Latif.

According to Syria's official SANA news agency, the plane, which was en route from Moscow to Damascus when it was forced to land, finally landed in the Syrian capital on Thursday at 5:10 am (02H10 GMT). It had been held in Ankara for about nine hours on Wednesday.

He added that the Turkish authorities used "aggression" against the crew after they "refused to sign (a document stating) that the plane had made an emergency landing."

Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said Turkish authorities seized "objectionable cargo" from the plane, but Syrian Air denied that any irregular items had been on board.

"The aircraft was not carrying any illegal material and its cargo was compatible with international laws and regulations," Abdel Latif said.

FT
I'am neither agreeing or disagreeing with you.
But keep in mind that international politics are extremely much more complex than we can imagine.
I don't want to be in any of the shoes of the guys in command. Either side.

And this bothers you why? Because Russian and Iranian methods are so much more civilized and refined? Or maybe because Iran and Russia really have THE systems that ware worth emulating? Or because Bashar's Syria has done great deeds by Lebanon and the Lebanese?

I only hope that the Turks do return the cargo to the Russians, but after they have opening it in front of the international media to show the world exactly what is in them.
Otherwise, when the crates get back to Russia, they will stick some civilian rubbish in them and claim that this is what was there.

I completely agree with you. This is smart politics, and we have been stupid enough all our lives to believe these lies.
What is happening with Turkey and how some Lebanese accept that it is fair for Turkey to interfere in Syrian business reminds me why Lebanese got allied with Israel in the seventies and eighties, when we had 35000 Syrian troops and thousands and thousands of armed Palestians killing us and destroying our cities every day. It also reminds me of why not one single Syrian airplane interfered to defend Lebanon from Israel when it invaded Lebanon. Maybe it's time for Hizbullah to go back and give its arms to the Lebanese army, and play politics instead of "Jihad" in Syria, and maybe it's time for Hizbullah to stop taking Lebanon as hostage for Syrian and Iranian interests. I want to be fair with you about American interests, can you be fair with me about Iranian and Syrian interests?

How does Syria do it? Kill any politicians that say anything against them. Since the civil war (when they 'invited' their way in), compare the number of anti syrian politicians killed to the pro syrian ones and you may get your answer.

The syrian regime is not nor has it ever been a friend of lebanon. It still believes that Lebanon was partitioned from its land as a homeland for the Maronites. After 1973 when they figured out they had no way of defeating Israel, they turned their attention here. Since then, they have been inventing reasons for being here and killing people in their way. They and the people that support this treacherousness regime can rot in hell.
