Berri Rejects Govt. Resignation, But Will Accept 'What Lebanese Agree upon'

Speaker Nabih Berri criticized on Wednesday calls for the government to resign, warning of a political vacuum in Lebanon should such a step be taken.

He added however: “We reject the resignation of the government and political vacuum, but we will accept what the Lebanese agree upon.”

He made his remarks after his weekly meeting with lawmakers.

Moreover, the speaker asked: “What are the guarantees that a new government can be formed in the absence of national dialogue and should the current cabinet resign?”

The March 14-led opposition has been demanding the resignation of the government in light of the assassination Friday of Internal Security Forces Intelligence Bureau head Brigadier General Wissam al-Hasan.

The camp and Progressive Socialist Party leader MP Walid Jumblat accused Syria of being behind the crime.

The March 14 General Secretariat said Wednesday that it will not relinquish its demand for the resignation of the government, which is dominated by Syrian allies, until it is fulfilled.

The camp also announced that it will no longer take part in the national dialogue sessions.

I think him resigning and removing himself entirely from the Lebanese political scene would be a good first step.

so let me understand this comment Mr. Berri:
Either we accept this government or there will be a vacuum?
so who is pushing hanging on to their seats? who is threatening of sectarian strife? with what? hizbushaitan guns? ....
no berri: we will not accept to be killed and bow our heads out of fear anymore.
we are a proud Lebanese people who want their country back, their independance from the syro/iranians.
and if yu do not like it, you and your likes, then leave this country before we make you leave for good.

"We reject the resignation of the government and political vacuum, but we will accept what the Lebanese agree upon".

What the hell does that mean???? Someone explain to me how this a$$hole has managed to retain his reign over all these years.

What benefits to the country are attributed to this a$$hole, of all the years as speaker of the house. Where has there been any added value?

I really dont get it

LOL M8 never warned of a political vacuum when their chia ministers resigned to make siniora s gvt fall!
how come now they worry? hypocrits and incompetents that s why....

@peace: Berri did not worry about making Saad Hariri fall because M8 knew at the time they had a new majority (facts proved him right: Miqati obtained the support of 68 MPs 11 days after Saad's fall). Not to mention the fact that it was a National Unity Gvmt, something that M14 refused FOR MONTHS to join in. They are not part of the Gvmt, and they do not have a say, unless there are 11 Ministers going out. Saniora ruled for years while the Shia parties were out of the Government.

Besides, Jumblatt is simply reasonable and right when he says that Miqati is better than political vacuum. M14 is not offering a viable alternative, and and the top of it is pushing for violence in the street.

Grow a pair, Saad, and come back to your country, or say which Sunni leader will do the job you are not willing and/or capable to do.
