Speaker Nabih Berri and Prime Minister Najib Miqati expressed on Monday solidarity with the army over the clashes in the eastern town of Arsal near the border with Syria, saying that it has the full political cover.

“What happened in Arsal is a crime against the whole nation,” Berri said in comments published in As Safir newspaper.

He pointed out that the incident is intolerable, calling on the judiciary to follow up the case till the end.

Two officers were killed on Friday in Arsal as the army was attempting to apprehend a wanted suspect, who was also killed in the clashes.

The speaker gave the army the green light to impose its authority across all the areas in Lebanon, saying “it doesn't need a permission to enter any specific area.”

For his part, the premier told As Safir that the army isn't favoring a side in Lebanon over the other or targeting anyone.

He hailed the army, pointing out that it is carrying out its tasks to maintain the interests of all the Lebanese.

Miqati said that the dispute over the role of the army should end, saying that the army has the needed political cover to do its tasks.

We should also have a full independent inquiry as to what happened as both the army and the arsal mayor stories are contradictory and both are full of holes. I have this uneasy feeling that Arsal has been setup by pro-syrian elements in the lebanese army's intelligence service. First syrian forces withdraws along 60 km from the border and then this. Did HA and allies commit to secure the border on behalf of the syrian regime so it can focus on fighting inside?

That story is a figment of your imagination. Noone ever suggested that the "ambush" was done by either FSA or Alqaeda. Also jusxtaposing the names FSA and Alqaeda shows how little you know about the conflict or the dishonesty in your argument.

And what evidence are you relying on? Or I do not need evidence. No need for an independent investigation? You just knwow.

Rafehh you are obviously stateting these comments from a sunni point of view. The army knows well who ambushed them and if you read the news (all outlets) you would get a feeling of who is behind this terrible incident and it isn't HA.

May be! However impartial one may try to be, one cannot be but a hostage of his background. While I support the pres and the army (to a point and as long as their actions are in the national interest), some in military intelligence has long been suspected of being to cozy with HA and Syrian regime. I may be wrong and I hope I am wrong since the army is the last institution we have and would hate to see it politicized. Btw - I am married to a Catholic and refused to register my sons because they want to force me to put Sunni on the application.
